« on: September 17, 2005, 03:52:42 AM »
A buddie of mine who cast his own bullet  for the 45-70 stated a BHN of 8
should work O.K. with FPS around 1450-1600 FPS or should BHN be a higher number,he also stated out of the mold it is .460 and then resized to .457
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK :D

45-70 CAST BULLET QUESTION

Sounds fine to me. I shoot my 45-70 with dead soft bullets, 1:30 tin/lead with the best results. If a round loaded with a .460" bullet will freely chamber I wouldn't size the bullets, just use them as cast and lubed.

45-70 CAST BULLET QUESTION

I'm cheap and don't want to buy tin.  I use straight air cooled wheel weights for smokeless loads.  I just learned how to anneal them to about a 9 in the oven so I'll be trying that for BP loads.  Mind you I'm not real picky in the accuracy dept, I shoot for MOD.. minute of deer.  3-4" 100 yd groups are the par I'm after.  I rarely shoot further than that, and a deer won't know the difference.

the grooves determine the amount of lube, which is a big deal with black powder.  keeping the fouling soft is critical to accuracy.  if you don't have a
mould already, one with lube grooves cut for black powder is a good idea.
I like S.P.G. but there are other fine lubes and formulas out there. I prefer
cardboard , felt, or vegetable fiber wads, not plastic.
Powder should be compressed, how much is often a matter of debate.  I don't bust a gut trying to compress it, but i do like it packed.
Talk to some of the b.p.c.r. guys if you get a chance. There is a learning curve ( i'm still in it) but fun using black.

The number of grooves is less important than the total capacity of the grooves. Lee 457-405-HP has three grooves, but they are tiny, and I would not want to use that bullet with black powder.

I buy nothing I can make. What little black powder shooting I do is done with a mixture of beeswax, crisco, and vegetable oil. Proportions are roughly 40-50-10. Gotta be real beeswax, though.

leftover ,if you compress the powder dont do it with soft alloy bullets .it will deform the bullet noses and they will not chamber ,it doesnt take much.... Dean

I would be very surprised if you were able to achieve 1400 fps with a BHN 8 bullet without serious leading. The bullets I shoot are either paper patch or air cooled wheel-weight alloy. The wheel-weight alloy has a BHN of 15 and you can successfully shoot these to 1500 fps with good accuracy and without leading. A harder bullet will cause just as much leading as a too soft bullet so it is important to match your bullet hardness with your velocity. I discuss some of these same issues on my website, www.montanabulletworks.com.

Consider using a standard, not magnum primer.  Drop the charge, put the wad on, then compress the charge with a compression plug, not with the bullet.  Put a newspaper wad on, seat the lubed bullet.
