New "Ears"

As I ride by bike (think mc) to and from school each day (28 mile round trip) I use ear plugs to keep what little hearing I've got left.

Along with my riding and shooting both CAS and uspsa I figured I ought to get the best ear plugs I could.  Now the muffs are usually the highest rated but hard to get a helmet or cowboy hat on over them

The foam roll up and ram in your ears were ok but gunshots were still loud.

The small rubber ones with the 3 ribs were better but hurt after a couple of hours.

So I went to the gunshow yesterday and got the molded in your ear custom ones--they can be made in pretty much any color.  Simple if not cheap.  You sit down.  The "technition" puts a small circle of foam waaay up in your ear, then fills the ear canal and outer ear with a liquid "rubber."  You sit there for 10 minutes while all the other gun show shopper come by and look at you, then he pulls the out and you go walking around for 20 minutes while he trims them up.

As I left he said not to wear them for 24 hours (so the gun show would be over and he would be long gone   ) and then they're done.

Started playing with them today (gave them the full 24 hours and they are easy to insert and go a great job of keeping the sound out.  Tomorrow will be the real test on the bike.

At the present cost of gas and the gun show entry cost I went on and got two pair.  One day-glow orange so I can find them when I cut grass and ride and a blue pair when I'm out in public.

I'll update this tomorrow after my two rides.

cr
p.s. they were $40 a pair, 2 pair for $80 (no discount for volume.  I'll be checking into what it takes to become a tech and see if I can't offer a better price for my club members.  Thinking that if I can get back the cost of material and equipment then everyone would benefit.

C.R.,
'Got my "new ears" last winter.  How does $4,000 sound to you?   That's a lot of guns & ammo!
Forty years of shooting and thirty years in machine shops (' never been to a rock concert)) .
They do have one advantage, though.  They turn off at loud noises so I don't need other hearing protection.   :)

Think I got the better of the deal.  Did loose a bunch of it in RVN but not near what you did.

At least you can smile about it,  not sure I could,

See you down the trail...

CR,
You'd be amazed at how many, young and old, have hearing loss and either don't know it of don't admit it.  It's going to get worse what with sub-woofers, headsets, etc.
'Asked the wife while sitting outside on a pleasant evening, "What's that racket?"  Cicadas, she says.  Now you see why I can't sit out here in the evening!
Ya know?  Birds actually make sounds?  They go peep, peep, chirp, chirp.  :)
Crickets keep you up at night?  Not!  Just put the aids on the dresser.
Hearing aids help me hear just as glasses help me see; same-same.
I tell the kids, I'm the bionic man!  8)
