NEF 17hmr misfires
« on: February 03, 2005, 12:51:51 PM »
All of a sudden, i've been getting a lot of misfires (3 in 25 rounds) I've always gotten a few with this rifle. BTW, I don't get any misfires when I use the 22 lr barrel.

Could it just be a matter of dirt and grease in the action? I cleaned it really well when I got the rifle, but NEF may have relubed when I sent it back for the .22 barrel.

Have all the misfires been from the same lot of .17hmr ammo?  If the gun shoots fine with the .22 barrel I would suspect a bad batch of .17hmr ammo.  Try a different brand or at least a different lot No. of .17hrm and see what happens.

Thanks.

it's hornady stuff. I'll get a couple boxes of something else, clean the gun and try again. I realized its worse than I said because I didn't count the rounds that I double hit.

I almost forgot but I had one round miss fire this after noon and it was Hornady v-max. This was the first I had shot this gun. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

There has been more than one that had to go back to H&R for tuning of the transfer bar timing.... :(

send it back !

i tried hornday and cci ammo, they all misfired. i scrubbed the gun down several times to get rid of the factory gunk, nothing helped. at least 5 out 25  shots misfired.

there have been a few 17 sporty's here, mine included, that misfired.

customer service was good on this repair, i had the gun back the next week and it hasn't skipped a beat since.

once it shoots good, you'll love this little gun !

I bought a box of Velociters at the range the last time I was there and they were terrible. I had about 20% misfires on it.

Sent about 100 rounds of various 17 HMR ammo downrange this past weekend. No misfires or any other malfunctions. Hornady, CCI, and Federal brands were used. New rifle worked great.

Hope you get your issues resolved.

Let us know how it turns out.

I had to send my .NEF 17 hmr back, Missfired on about 50% of shots from CCI & Hornady's.  Took about 2 weeks to get repaired, I have not had a misfire since sending it in......now a happy camper

I have a Marlin 917V and have been experiencing alot of misfires. I had no problem using the CCI ammo from Wal-Mart. I bought some Hornady ammo and out of 100 rounds I have had 7 misfires. I know this is the NEF section, but wanted to point out that it may definately be a problem with the ammo.

The rim of the HMR is quite a bit bigger than the rim of a 22, are the fireing pins in the same place on both rifles?  If they are then they are not optimum for either.  I have a 17 HMR barrel and a 22 will nearly fall into the chamber.  Larry

That's cuz the 17hmr is based on the 22mag which is larger than a 22Lr. The Sportster frames are all the same or they wouldn't fit all the rimfire barrels to all the frames.

Not saying they don't put them on the same frame, I just don't know how they get the fireing pin to hit the right place.  I am sittin here with a 17 HMR barrel and dial calipers and the hole is dead in the center of the barrel.  When I put the barrel on a SB2 frame the fireing pin hit dead in the center of the 17 HMR chamber.  If a .22 of some nature were put in the same position then the fireing pin would not hit on the rim because the rims are of a different diameter.  I am no expert on the rim fire models, I Just don't know how it works with Handi rifles, I only have this 17 HMR barrel so I can re-chamber it to 17 Remington for a hot little Coyote gun.  Larry
