Front Bead for Cabelas Hawken
« on: September 23, 2005, 06:19:07 AM »
I have built a .54 Cabelas Hawken from a kit.  I had my gunsmith install a TC Tang Peep Sight and now I want to replace the large front sight with a fine beeded target sight.

Anyone no where I can find a "finer" bead for a Cabelas Hawken?  I tried the local gun shop who had me install a Lyman that was WAY too tall.  I couldn't adjust the height high enough to impact with conicals at 100 yards.

Thanks for the help!

sure, your too tall front blade sight can be adjusted with a tool from your local hardware store,, a "file", it works well,, just remember you can't un-file.
Because the Cabelas rifle is made by Lyman/investarms the choice of metric size front or rear sights is a good choice.
Track of the wolf (link below) has three items that may fit for you.

Fine blade site #FS-PA-253 in iron or brass it has the proper dove size but may be too short a depth.
Metric Bead Front site #FS-Met-Bead,,made too fit. it's got a white bead too look at.
Or the Lyman #17 front globe sight, the #FS-17-AEU will fit the Cabelas. The Lyman #17 front globe is a fully hooded front "peep" style that comes with 7 different inserts,,the hunter part of me has never been partial too hooded front's but too each his own,,you hit the link below and with a little searching you can read all about these sights,,you can e-mail Track for free with all the questions you have and/or call,,,good luck.

i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

lost id,

I feel the same way regarding the hooded sights.  I can't bring myself to install a "fiber optic" sight on this traditional style rifle (Cabelas list one specifically for the rifle) so I needed some good options.

I loved the bead on the lyman I tried, but when I tried to file the post I cut too much away.  It was noticably taller than the factory sight too.  I have started to file away at the factory sight, but feel a little worried about working on it with a file and I still don't have a "real" bead to work with.  I will email track of the wolf and see what they recommend.

Thanks!
