coyote load for 243
« on: October 04, 2005, 03:51:10 PM »
I just picked up a Savage 99 in 243 and need to develop a load for long range coyote shooting.  What have been some of your good loads?

I`ve got a friend that is shooting 60 gn. HP`s for coyote. Kills them dead, but I`ve seen them almost cut in 1/2, not good for a hide hunter, but great for a varmint hunter.

Hornady v-max bullets are very accurate, but they do put quite a hole in a coyote. I would take headshots if a nice hide is your goal. On broadside shots, my exit hole is in the 4-5" range! A light soft point behind the shoulder would do less damage, but it is more dangerous since they richochet much worse. I like the v-max and ballistic tips, because if I miss or they go through the coyote, they basically disinegrate when they hit anything.
Unless your shots are very long, you don't need to drive the light bullets in a 243 at max velocity either. It has way more than enough punch, even with light loads.
If anyone can recomend a load with less muzzle blast for a shoot barreled 243, I would like to see it. I haven't messed with too many different powders in  that cartridge, but they all seem to have lots of blast with the light bullets in a 20" barrel.

Good shooting,
Brian

My older tang safety Ruger .243 likes 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips behind 41 grains of IMR 4064. This load yields a chronographed muzzle velocity of 3230 fps. It will destroy coyotes.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

45 grains H4831 and 85-100 grain bullet.  Work up if using the heavier 95-100 gr bullets.   Make sure you seat the bullets so they cleanly work in your rotary magazine.  If you want to kick up the speed a little, try the Nosler 55BT and start at 45 gr H4831 and work up.  Should be a screamer in that 99.
