Which gun to choose?
« on: September 24, 2005, 06:26:03 PM »
I will start by saying I am a deer/elk hunter, that occassionally hunts birds, but when I do, over the years I have noticed that I have a tendency to shoulder my shotgun as if it were a rifle, which causes me to look down on the rib of my shotgun, sending my shots high.  Other than more practice, would changing to a shotgun that had a higher sight picture, similar to a rifle be a good option, and if so, what would you recommend...I presently shoot a 1187, and by the way I shoot left handed, so I need a lefty or bottom ejection options...thanks

Look into a BPS or Ithaca for bottom eject, both are just as reliable as the sun coming up in the east and should be just the ticket for a lefty. I still do what you described from time to time with my shots going high. Part of it is fit, there are some nifty adjustable blutt plates which might help. Assuming good fit otherwise, pattern your shotgun and then practice, practice, practice on the trap range making sure the old cheek is snug on the comb.

With a shotgun your eye is the rear sight. The key is "to keep the block on the stock" as we always said. Meaning get that cheek down on the stock and in the same place every time.

Swithing to a different shotgun is not likely to be of any help. You just need more wing shooting practice. Go shoot skeet, sporting clays or trap and get the practice you need.
