Steel Shot Questions
« on: February 03, 2006, 04:58:04 PM »
Is it safe for me to use steel shot in my Moss. 590 with a cylinder bore barrel?  I'm pretty sure it will be fine, but I wanted to make absolutely sure.  I sent an email to Mossberg about this, but got a long-awaited response simply referring me to the operators manual. :x

Also, can extensive use of steel shot cause any excess wear?

Thanks for any clarification here.

Any confirmation, please?  Just a simple yes and no is good enough for me, as long as it is correct information.

Steel Shot Questions

Any modern shotgun made in the last 20~25 years should be good with steel shot. If larger pellets are used, T, F, etc full chokes are not recommended typically.

My question is why?
Steel shot is federally mandaed for waterfowl hunting. More expensive with less performance energy wise. It does pattern tighter in a given gun becuase the pellets are hard and stay round, but that's the only good thing I can say about the stuff. Most people hate it.

you shouldn't want to shoot steel (only for waterfowl) out of cyl bore (only for home defense).  Any recent gun can shoot steel except some believe that full choke will blow the pattern.

You can shoot rocks out of mossburg.
