Starter Problem????
« on: January 05, 2006, 06:52:44 PM »
Vehicle:
1997 GMC K1500  5.8L

Background:
Replaced the alternator and tensioner approx six months ago.
Checked battery...good shape.  Holds a charge...everything seems to be operating fine.
Wiring (on top) looks fine.

Problem:
Several months after the installation of the alternator and tensioner...every time I turn the ignition on, the starter seems to "labor/bog-down".  After what seems like the second "turn/cycle" of the starter...the engine fires right up.

The starter seems to bog-down more after frequent starts/stops...i.e, short trips around town.  But to date, the starter seems to be able to turn the engine over.  It doesn't seem to be getting worse...but something isn't right.

There is no grinding...just a recurring hesitation in the starter when the ignition is turned-on.   Bad winding in the starter?

Ideas?  Thanks guys!  ...Chris    :D

Check for a dead cell in the battery or if sealed load test the battery. Check battery posts and connections for corrosion, be sure to check ground wire connections too. If you don't find anything then check the starter. :D

Sounds like a battery to me. Take it to one of the larger auto parts stores and they should be able to load test it.
