There's nothing like rocking up to a range meet or hunt with some guy you've just met and them asking why that round they could SWEAR was one thing just doesn't look right. :grin:
Even better when the mystery cartridge performs like a real cracker.
Everyone, his dog, his girlfriend, his girlfriend's dad and his girlfriend's dad's drinking buddy own a 270 or 30-06. :roll:

If you aren't going to shoot over 225 yards or so, go with the 308...if long range shots are the norm (225+) go with the 270 with 130 gr. loads. both are high quality and highly dependable loads. Both will handle deer sized game out to pretty big distances...the 270 is a bit longer, the 308 is a bit heavier and leaves a slightly bigger hole. Both offer plenty of factory loads. 270 is a SA and 308 is a LA...take your pick, they've both proved themselves over many years. You can't go wrong.

If SA means Short Action and LA means Long Action I think you mean that 308 is a Short Action round and 270 is a Long Action.
If not what exactly do these abbreviations mean? :|

Hi All,

      Well now personally I do not understand the argument about long/short actions. Surely it's just down to plain old getting used to your rifle :roll:  As to which one to choose ............. well that's a bad question to ask me :oops:  I would say go and look at rifles and pick which ever one fits you best and feels best and is in your price range, either cartridge will do what you want so go with the best rifle and go shooting and once you get it set up and your used to it go hunting :wink:

     Some one has already mentioned that the .270 is probably a little better for varmints with the factory 100 grn loads, although to be fair about it I do believe that there are 110 grn loads available for the .308. Swings & roundabouts again :roll:

       Actually the 7.92mm (8x57 Mauser) is actually superior to the 30-06, the std Spitzer load introduced in 1905 using the 154 grn spitzer gave a velocity of 2900 fps, the 30-06 came about directly as a result of this new German adoption, but for some reason the US when the altered the 30-03 cartridge to the 30-06 adopted a 150 grn bullets at 2700fps :eek:  which of course made the 7.92mm superior. The S&B SPEC 196 Grn modern sporting ammuntion has a claimed velocity of over 2600 fps. This I am thinking would be excellent Moose or Elk medicene :wink:
