358 JDJ/Redfield scope mount
« on: October 03, 2005, 09:54:08 AM »
Has anybody used the 3 ring redfield mount on their 358 JDJ.  I'm shooting heavy 250 gr RN loads, and I just wonder if the two screws that hold the base on will be enough.

If your 358 jdj kicks like mine does, 2 screws are never going to hold ! I have a tsob mount on mine and so far ,with some real beasty loads it's still holding.  You are trying to hold about 37-38 foot pounds of recoil energy with those screws. More is definetly better!

I meant 4 screws, the standard 4 tapped holes as opposed to having two extra put in.

Philosophically....redfield mount is a huge chunk of steel, lots of mass and then add the weight of the scope and you have a lot of weight held on by 4 screws without much depth to them mounted on a big kicker.  Also, 3 rings on that mount can't be adjusted forward or aft for positioning...
I recommend the TSOB mount or get a weaver ring and modify it for 6 screws and use 3 lightweight rings.  My weaver 3 ring mount flew off my 444 barrel even when glued and screwed with 4 screws...I like the weaver with 6 screw modification.
