First harvest of the year

I took this sika deer on my property in Dorchester County MD last weekend. It was a spike still in velvet.

There are free ranging sika deer in the marshes in certian areas of the eastern shore.

Way to go, I tried several time last year in Dorchester County MD also. The closest I got to one was about 70 yards and never even see it, just heard it. I did see several at 800 yards away.  :cry:

Sika deer are very small bodied animals. The ones in Maryland are not like the giant sika deer.

Looks tender? Just not a lot of meat on them suckers! :lol:

Archery starts this Saturday for me, so maybe I can get one of the bigger-bodied white tails that skat around my property 8)

I'd take a sika over twice the whitetail venison any day of the week. My mother AND wife feel the same way.

I tested this by putting them both side by side an three separate occasions. Both types were cooked the same way as the others and my wife has chosen the sika EVERY time over the whitetail.

I also butcher the deer the same way and let them hang for the same amount of time.

IMHO (and my family's) the Sika is better.
