Deerfield 240 SP loads
« on: October 02, 2005, 05:03:55 AM »
Does anyone have a pet load for 240 SP in a Deerfield that closely matches say Winchester factory bullets?  These have plenty of ump to drop deer but don’t slap you around on the back end of the gun when shooting paper.  The loads that I have come up with so far are either too week to cycle reliable or discourage me from proper practice.

I don't have a "Deerfield", but I do have an older, original model Ruger semi-auto carbine in .44 magnum.

I have had good success with a maximum load of 24.0 grains of Hodgdon's H-110 behind a 240 grain Nosler JHP bullet.  This load generates 1817 fps out of a 20" barrel with 36,200 CUP.

In their "freebe" handout (at most reloading equipment dealers) "Basic Reloaders Manual-2003", Hodgdon WARNS that their H-110 powder should NOT be reduced MORE than 3% from their maximum listed load (24.0 grains).  Doing the "math", this means that you can reduce their maximum load (24.0 grains) by only .72 grains yielding a "starting load" of 23.28 grains... a very "narrow" powder weight range.

I have been loading mine at 23 g. of H 110 and this always cycles well in this gun and while this well might be my hunting load it is not particularly pleasant to shoot at paper.  It seems to be 'stouter" than factory loads.  Of course if I were shooting these at a deer I would not feel them at all.  I have given up at finding a replacement recoil pad for this gun and have gone instead for a shoulder pad.  If the mountain wont go to Mohamed then I guess he will go to the mountain.

Mine likes 23.5 grs. H110 under a 240 gr. Nosler JSP in starline brass. Have killed many a hog!  :D
