416 Rigby Encore for Africa
« on: September 27, 2005, 09:40:47 AM »
JJHACK, I have a 416 Rigby in an Encore. I used it for a Water Buffalo hunt and it worked great. Is a single shot Encore in 416 Rigby a good idea for Cape Buffalo? Or should I think about getting a bolt action, I am very quick on the reloading of the Encore.  :D

Thanks

There are some things to consider here that may put this in anew light. For starters the buffalo hunt will cost over ten grand when all is said and done. I for one would not risk that kind of expense to a very limited tool. If you can out shoot the PH who is with you then relaoding for that second shot is OK if you are that fast. I rather doubt that if the feces hit the fan the PH is going to wait on you. Again do you want to spend that kind of money to have anyone else help you?

Lastly if you do not hunt with this hand cannon in the next year or two the odds of ever using a handgun in Africa are getting very slim. Each season that goes by we have more and more struggle with the laws. It is now to the point where I hire Sap's officers to greet my hunters as they come off the plane and walk them through the process with all the paperwork filled out 3 months in advance. This way I know my hunters are good to go. The line for gun permits in the Joburg airport can take many  hours to get through otherwise.

If you want to hunt buffalo or plains game with a handgun you better make a plan to do it sonner then later. That is unless you want to use a borrowed gun from a resident with the permit to own it.

JJHACK, my 416 Rigby is a Rifle in the Encore. But I will take your advice and get another gun, I understand fully what you are talking about. It also gives me an excuse to buy another gun.  :D

Sorry my friend, I see encore and I think handgun. It's just a mental thing with me, same as when I hear contender!

Having owned and used a 375JDJ many times in the "old RSA" prior to the new government I was very happy with the results on plains game. The days are running out for handgun hunters in RSA. I can still aquire permits for them but it's not going to get easier. You will also need to apply for those permits 6 months in advance to be safe.

It sounds like the South Africans have as good a grip on single shot handguns as they do on the cause of AIDS.

One thing that took a while for me as an American living in South Africa was to be able to accept I was not in America.

What I mean is this is an independant country with it's own government laws, rules, and policies. For a long time I would live my life as if I were in America, not in South Africa. I would find my slef thinking as an American only really accepting what I knew as law in the USA.

However after a few months, or even years I began to realize more and more that I was in somebody elses country now and the rules have changed. It does not matter one little bit what the law was in the USA because I am not in the USA anymore. Growing up in America you pretty much know your rights by the time you're in your  late teens. But those rights embedded into your head don't mean you have them when you cross the border to another country. You gotta start over with the "new rights" if there are any!

"We are not in Kansas anymore toto" is one of the thoughts that go through my mind every time I go back to work or visit now.  They may not have it right, but it's their country to have it wrong if they choose.

Here is another example about something along these lines. I was listening to Shawn Hannity who my wife adores by the way. He is a good guy and I too enjoy listening to his radio show and his Fox program from time to time.  A few weeks ago he was ranting about the stupidity of the Aruban government about how poorly they manage their legal system and how badly they have botched this event with the 19 year old girl that vanished.  Yet they had three guys in jail. Well they were about to let them out and Shawn was hot and really disturbed about the horrible legal system in Aruba.

I said to my wife, how is it that he could be so angry about the Aruban government and I don't recall a word about OJ slicing his wifes head off, Micheal Jackson sexually abusing little boys and Robert blake shooting his X wife. How is it that Americas legal system is better?

Nope, were not in Kansas anymore toto!
