fluted barrel

the new fluted barrel looks pretty cool. it'll probably show up in movie being shot by a dude having a name like "diesel" or "hammer".

i thought the idea of fluting was to make a barrel stiffer, or mechanically better than a regular barrel, not just lighter. also, fluting would shift the mechanical resonance to some less detrimental level. the basis, i think, is to take the same weight barrel and shape it to produce a more stable barrel. simply removing mass from a barrel doesn't seem that it would make it a better shooting barrel. i would guess that the fluted barrel would have a larger diameter and the same weight as the original barrel to make a difference.

i don't know ......

What about increased surface area for less heat build during shooting strings?

There are some great studies on the subject, the conclusion of which are:  It does not make a barrel stiffer for the same size un-fluted barrel and it only cools faster because it has less mass and gets hotter so it will give off more heat.  It does look cool however and it is lighter, it is also stiffer than a barrel of the same weight that is just tapered.  Larry

I don't care why they are fluted, but my Fluted Varmit 223 and 204 are really accurate.

the flutting reduces the weight, and the stiffness, but the weight is reduced more, as a percentage of original.  Thus the weight/stiffness ratio is changed.  The barrel harmonics are a fuction of mass and stiffness.
