Author Topic: Encore Stainless Muzzleloader Barrel Cleaning (Read 943 times)

Hey everybody! I'm new to the Encore world and I just purchased the 209x50 with the stainless barrel. I've never owned a rifle with a stainless barrel. Do you clean and season the stainless barrel the same way as the blued type? Do you use the Bore Butter type stuff or regular gun oil etc.?

Cleans up the same. Seasoning I don't know.

I use 777 powder and it cleans up with water. I use the Powerbelt bullets which don't seem to need the bore butter, but I do have some of that for loads that may be harder to ram into the barrel.

I bore butter mine same as if it were blue. No oil just the water cleanup and bore butter. Seems to hold up fine and no rust.

We shot a lot of rounds today out of TCs. Mine is an Encore 209x50 and my friend has a new Omega.

We both experienced low hits following cleaning and application of bore butter. Would hit 2-3 inches low and the second and third shots would rise for repeatable results.

This seems kinda opposite of our experience on cartridge rifles where we find the first shot following cleaning is usually high.

Nothing wrong with the bore butter concept and I will continue using it. Just makes me plan a little differently for that first shot.

My current plan (since I am shooting 777 is to leave the barrel dirty from one shot until I hunt next Saturday. I do not believe there will be a corrosion issue from the 777 like there would be from black powder.

Has anyone else experienced this fall on the first shot followed by the rise?

I don't know about the trip7 but with the rs I didn't clean the barrel for a couple days and got some rust starting. I didn't think with stainless I'd get any rust but there are some non-stainless parts and stainless will corrode. Do you think it might be better to sight in for the first shot and run a cleaning patch after every shot? I wouldn't chance not cleaning it.

My other best idea was to clean it now and just make sure I have time to shoot it before arriving at the hunting site. Could always stop somewhere in route and pop a round into the ground. Then everything would be up and ready.

That's probably what I will do tonight. Thanks for your thoughts.

P.S. I have seen my bore butter turn brown after shooting and make the barrel look like rust because it "seasons" the barrel. But when cleaning the stainless, it comes right out with the patches etc. I only mention this in case that is what some of you see and think it might be rust.

I didn't get any rust in the barrel I got it in the firing pin area and the locking lugs. I clean mine after every shot with #13. I just wet a patch and run it in and out a few times flip it and run it down again. Only takes a few seconds. You'll get the most consistancy this way. Good luck!
