Who Uses AA #5?
« on: October 05, 2005, 02:08:35 PM »
Anyone use AA #5 for their 45 ACPs?  My favorite for my 45 is W231.  I did some reading on AA #5 and it seems like a nice powder.  Compared to W231, is it any cleaner, more uniform, or accurate?

Also comparing to W231, does #5 burn noticeably hotter or increase muzzle blast/flash?  Just curious to know if I'll have to let my barrel cool down a little more frequently.  I'm not one to push my pistols to the extreme limit.

I would appreciate some opinions on this powder before I decide to switch and devote more time to load development instead of shooting. :)

  Thanks alot.

I have used #5 in 270 ren, 32 mag, 38s, etc.  Works great in the smaller cases.  Have not used it in the larger cases.  In some 38 loads, I use a styrofoam disc to keep powder contained close to the primer due to lots of empty case space.  It is a good powder, but I would go to #7, #9 or other powders that take up more case space.

Jim, that's eggzactly what I use it for.  It burns clean and produces decent velocities per grain.  I've also used it in 45 Colt and found it just fine.

Sorry to report that the company that makes it went out of business. Accurate Arms is looking for a new maker. Needless to say if you can find it, buy it up.

Shooting Times is a great magazine.  I rarely, if ever have concerns with Rick Jamison's articles.  Must be his good Oregon living.  Have written to Mike Venturino a couple of times for accepting 4-5" groups at 25 yards as acceptable with some of the guns he has written on.

If you pick up some meat at the grocery store, save the styrofoam tray.  Use one of your resized 45acp brass to punch holes in the tray.  A small flat head nail dropped into the case with point thru primer flash hole works good to push the discs out of the brass.  Primer and powder your cases.  Place one of those discs on the powder to hold it near the primer flash hole, then seat your bullet.  See if your accuracy increases.  Some loads do, some don't.

Good Luck,
