LH Savage ,270 110 project finished

Some time ago I was posting about a LH Savage 110 in .270 that I was working on. In the last steps of mounting the scope base I broke off a base screw in the receiver. I drilled a hole in the sheared off screw and tried to back it out with an E-Z Out. The E-Z Out broke off in the process! I was forced at that point to take the rifle to my local gunsmith. He was unable to remove the screw/E-Z Out combo so he drilled and tapped new holes in the receiver and mounted my scope. While it was in the the shop he also checked the rifle over and made some adjustments to my bedding.
This afternoon I fired about a dozen, five shot, sub-inch groups with a variety of factory ammo I had on the shelf. This included 130 grain Remington Core-Lokt, 150 grain Winchester Power Point, 130 grain Hornady Custom Interlock, 130 grain Federal Classic and a handload using 140 grain BTSP Hornady Interlock bullets over H4831. During this session no goups were over 1 inch at 100 yards except for a couple of called flyers (my fault).

I was well pleased with the results of this project and I am glad I chose a Savage to base my efforts on. This will be my primary deer rifle this fall using a 130 or 140 grain SP or SPBT bullet. My son and I plan to hunt feral hogs in South Carolina this October and I am in the process of working up a 150 grain load for that purpose.

So far I have converted a LH, wood stock, detachable mag .270 110 to;

Internal blind mag
Stockade Money Saver stock fiberglass with aluminium pillars
custom cammo
metal trigger guard
SSS Tactical bolt handle
Leupold scope base and rings
Leupold 3.5x10 50mm Vari X III scope
full action bedding
floating barrel

I just got back from the range. I had picked up a fresh box of Hornady Custom 130 grain .270 ammo. I set up the rifle and fired the first shot from a cold barrel with a light coat of gun oil inside. The first shot hit 2.5 inches high and about .75" to the left of the vertical line. The next three shots were dead center on the vertical line, 2.5 inches high forming a perfect three leaf clover measuring .5".

Total for the four shot group .75"

My work here is done.

Glad you were able to get the scope mounted. Just for reference an old mechanic once told me if you take a high carbon bit, heat it cherry red, then quench it in mercury it will drill and easy out. DO NOT breath any of the vapors, They will poision you.  :wink:

You know I look at new and used rifles all the time and dream. I was at the local Gander Mountain store last night and they had a LH Weatherby in .257 Weatherby Mag. It set me thinking about super-wiz bang magnums. I also held a Stainless Model Seven in .260 and dreamed about it with a compact scope.
On the way home I was thinking about all this and about how those rifles really won't do anything my latest project can do given normal hunting situations. About the only rifle need I have right now would be a large bore, close in rifle for hogs, bear, ect. like a 45-70 lever action.
I think my new projects will be wildlife food plots, elevated shooting blinds with swivel chairs and propane heaters, new places to hunt and possibly a light weight climbing stand like a Lone Wolf.
In short I need more time to shoot what I have rather than build something new. That is at least until another preety face seduces me.
