Rex Trail update
« on: October 06, 2005, 12:46:48 PM »
Still very very muddy, went up there on the 5th thinking most people still had to work, I was wrong. Hate to see what it is like this weekend, I would advise to maybe wear a orange hat or somthing, after I had one yahoo, looking at me across a swamp with his rifle scope, I yelled at him and he took off, I would have loved to seen him on the trail. Guess I will wait and see after we get some snow fall

Durned ATVs!  The Rex trail was nothing but a long, skinny willow patch when I went to ride it on my horse in the late '60s.  But that was back when the Earth was green, and there weren't as many people around.  And the hunting regulations for the entire state fit in your shirt pocket....

Aaargh!

Not everybody was on the trail.  I just drove back to Fairbanks from Anchorage on the 5th and the entire Parks Highway from north of Healy all the way to Nenana was loaded with road hunters.

Those road hunters were very successful, the season was closed by emergency order after only three days.  The Rex will continue to be very muddy till after freese-up.  Snow don't help till all those potholes freese, at least three inches.  It takes three inches to support fourwheelers.  Snow machines can't really be used till the rivers freeze, and that is usually the third week of November.  Usually by mid October the snow gets too deep for fourwheelers.  To hunt a Cow now, or for the muzzleloader hunt in November you need to be across the second river.  Met a lady last night trying to find a belt for a Polaris 6X6, her husband was stranded on the Rex.  Seems he got into too much water and smoked his belt.  That's why I'm waiting till freez-up.  Good Luck to all you people that try and go sooner.  Hope you like being cold and wet.  Read (Too Cold To Strike A Match) in Outdoor Experiences in the NEF/H&R forums.  That was the Rex in October.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Oops!  Sorry, that story is not there.  I'll have to reinput it.  It'll be a couple of days thou, I've got a lot to do first.  Plus I've got to find a hard copy so I can scan it instead of typing it all over.  Rog
