30-30 Win Article
« on: October 06, 2005, 04:22:24 AM »
Wanted to let you all know there is an story in the November issue of Shooting Times magazine on modernizing the 30-30 Win.
It gives a number of loads for spitzer bullets.
Layne Simpson's, the author, favorite deer hunting load for the G2 Contender with 23 inch barrel was H4895, Federal 210M primer, Winchester cases, and Hornady 150 grain SST bullets.
He says it delivers sub four inch accuracy at 300 yards in the G2 rifle.
He also did a load with the Hornady 110 grain V-max and Reloder 7.
He reached velocities of 2844 fps with 100 yard accuracy of 1.31 inches from an average of three five shot groups.

I have long been a fan of Layne Simpson...and have been a subscriber to Shooting Times for nearly a decade.  That magazine and Handloader I can't live without.

I also read the article and it was well put together (not a suprise from Mr. Simpson) and like what he found.  I have been wanting to convert my Contender into a carbine.  Might sell the 14" 30-30 and get a 23".  Then again might keep the pistol barrel and add a 23" tube.
