I have a 300 wsm and am going to start working up an elk load with it. I am going to use 180 grain bullets.Any thoughts on were to start as far as a powder is concerned.

The best powder I have used in the 300 WSM so far is VV N550. It is a "high energy" powder and gives excellent results with the 165gr bullets I load. It costs a bit more than some powders but no more than I shoot, I feel its worth it. Another that really shines is Alliant RL19. This was the first powder I loaded in my WSM and  gave excellent results as well. With the 180 gr bullets you plan to use, You could do no wrong with either of these, as well as RL22, and VV N560, the two next slower powders for each company.

I just got back from a NV Elk hunt where I took a cow of approximately 600-700 lbs.  I used a 168 gr. Barnes Triple shock X over 68.5 gr. of IMR 4831.  At a range of a bit over 300 yards I hit the animal twice, the first a lung shot the passed thru and "froze" the animal in place.  The 2nd shot obliterated the heart and dropped the cow like a bag of potatoes (albeit an extremely large bag...).  In sum, accurate and hard hitting, awesome terminal performance.  I'm done looking for a load for elk for my 300 wsm.

Cheers !!!
