savage law enforcement rifles
« on: September 18, 2005, 10:37:35 AM »
im thinkin about gettin some type of law enforcement, tactical rifle in .308 and i was wonderin if the savage law enforcement rifles were very accurate. i would like the rifle to shoot under 1 MOA at 100 yds. i really like the remington police rifles and i know they would be accurate as hell but im not sure about spendin 2,000 dollars on an out of the box rifle since i would still like some money left in the bank for a leupold and a harris bipod. i also like the McMillan stock on it i think its the model 10 fpxp?? thanks for any input!!

The Sniper/Team Leader on our SWAT unit is dying to get a Savage like you're speaking of to play with.  He was talking about a recent school he taught for TTOPA (State SWAT Association) and he had one student with a Savage and another with a "HIGH DOLLAR GUN."  He said once he got down range to check targets, he could not tell any difference in the accuracy.

He would buy one he says, but he is "tight" with his money, and its like pulling teeth to get him to go out for lunch at times.

If you ever do purchase the rifle in which you are looking at,
try out the Federal Gold Match bullets.
Very consistant. Those might be the ones Muzzleblast was talking about.

thanks a lot rickyp!! the savage with that load sounds like a winner!!! another question for yall. what power scope should i put on it and what base and rings should i use?? i know i wanna put a leupold on it but i cant decide what power. i will be doin lots of target shootin with it. max range probably around 650 to 700 yards. on average ill be shootin 100, 200, and 300 yard groups. i was thinkin about the 8.5-25X50 VX III. is this too much power?? and also what recticle should i choose?? i will also be doing some deer hunting with the rifle in the winter but mainly groups and just long range targets so i guess a target recticle or mildot recticle of some type would be best. the problem is the 8.5-25 doesnt come in many recticles. it comes in the wide duplex, target dot, fine duplex, and varmint hunters. thanks for the info and any suggestions would be appreciated!
thanks,
joseph

I have a Leupold 1 piece mount and med. rings on mine and a Bushnell 3200 elite 5-15. this works well for my needs
For powder I am using IMR 4895 with a charge of 39.0. (hornady list a max load of 40.4 for the S.P. 165 gr bullets)

If you are just going to use it for target shooting and hunting  I would think about the Bushnell 3200 elite 5-15 with the firefly reticle. this would give you the higher X for target shooting and for hunting you can bring it down to something like 9x and use the firefly for shots at game in low light.

I doubt my rifle will ever see the deer woods.

thanks ricky!! thats usually the standard for rings and bases! thats what ive got on my 10/22.  i think i decided on my scope. i think im gonna get the leupold mark 4 6.5-20X50 in the mildot recticle. i know its expensive but (and i know yall arent gonna like this)i really only trust leupold optics for anything so thats what im gonna go with. thanks for yalls help!!

I have a .223 Model 10FP. The thing is an absolute tack driver. 3 shot clover leaf groups that you can put the tip of your pinky over. I love it. It's a little on the heavy side but for what I use it for, it's awesome.
