barrel info
« on: October 18, 2005, 06:37:53 AM »
I have seen a few of these rifles lately showing up at the range, and was talking to a fella last week , and have noticed that H&R also makes differnt barrels that are interchangeable, is there any other barrel maker out there that can make custum barrels. Saw on the ads about a 357 max the only other co. offering that is t/c and the price diffrence betwwen H&R and T/C is almost 300.00, now if I was to get me the Buffalo Classic in 45-70 and wanted something other than than the standard barrels who is converting barrels for H&R and building  barrels for different cals. thanks KJG

Welcome aboard!! :D  Wayne York of Oregon Gunsmithing has done several rechambers and/or rebores for different members here and does a fine job of it!!! A couple of us have had him R&R .25-06 Ultras to .338-06 and they both shoot sub moa with hunting loads, mine with 250gr SGK and 230gr Failsafes, and Mac's shoots the 180gr Accubonds as well, also. I've also had him R&R a .38-55 Target to .405 Winchester which shoots the factory 300gr FP into well less than moa. I also have a .45-70 BC rechambered to .45-120 and there are a few others with .45-90 or larger as well.

The BC frame will accept any rifle barrel made as well as all the shotgun barrels accept the 10ga. You will more than likely need a stock change for scope mounting, though.

But the list of available calibers is extensive to begin with, so be sure to check them out. There are also other calibers that have been produced in the past that are out there if you look for em.....35 Whelen, .444 Marlin, 7x57, 7x64 to name a few...H&R is also offering a $20 rebate on new centerfire rifles thru the end of November!!!

does he have a web site, to check out, and the 338-06 did you do a complete rebore along with rechamber and what did he charge you, I did look over the H&R web site and ordred their catalog, rechambering the 45-70 sound like it would be interesting,if other barrels could be obtained resonable like the H&R site shows I might dump the encore and have me some fun, The calbers i'm interested in would be 7mmtcu for my daughter, the 338-06 would be for me along with 357 max and 45-70, I sure love the one action and multipal barrel idea tremendusly. kjg

Sorry, I intended to post the link to Wayne's site, but forgot!!

A rechamber and rebore will cost $300, he uses cut rifling and it is extremely well done.

The .357 mag barrels were still available recently from H&R from a run of 100 barrels earlier this year, it can be hand chamber reamed to max very easily, several of us here have done it themselves with a reamer that has made the rounds, IIRC Leftovedj has the reamer. It can also be rented for less than $50 total. I'd give H&R a call if you want one, they may very well still have some .357mag barrels. You would need to send a frame into them to have it fitted since they won't sell barrels seperately.
