OK You've Talked Me Into It!

Deer season ended today (sadly) and I've been thinking about coyotes as we have alot of them and not many rabbits anymore so I'm going to blame the coyotes and see if I can thin them a little besides it sounds exciting. So if you have some advice to share on a good mouth call thats easy to learn or other gear thats cheap and useful besides rifle choice that would be great. I'm on a budget for this little adventure so one of my scoped deer calibres will have to do.  I don't know how long a hunter should call before moving if not successful or any other particulars or what I'm exactly getting into so fire away.  I did dump the remains of a couple deer I killed saturday at one location. Thinking I might try there first.  Thanks all!

This site has more coyote knowledge than any other I've seen on the net, but I wouldn't mention shooting them with a deer rifle. They're pretty good guys, but they really look down on just "killing" predators, and not making an effort to use the hides.

When you first go there, make sure to read the "read this before posting" section first.

So I have a question: I haven't started shooting coyotes yet, but I'm wondering, where do you find someone to take or buy the hides? I've skinned other animals, and don't see a problem with coyotes, but seeing as I live in an apartment I don't have any room to try and tan them myself.

I'll start by asking around the local gun stores, but in the mean time, I'd like to know how you guys do it.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

Boy Jerry, you may not have done him a favor with that link!

Killdeer, Hold your hands as far apart as you can, their combined knowledge is more than that. Now put you hands together, that is about how tolerant most are to views on the subject that are outside of their own. If you choose your words wisely and read, there is a boat load of info. Good luck!

This is my advice, go to where hunters gather in your area and ask who predator hunts and talk to as many of them as possible. Experience is the best teacher and if you are smart, you will not make the same mistakes twice. The coyote won't!

Thanks guys,  I checked out the site and got some good info. Do not really have a need to post though as most of my questions have already been answered.  Guess  I will be a slob hunter in their  eyes as I don't plan on skinning a smelly coyote for a $10 pelt.   Thanks again.

LOL!!

At least I didn't just give him the site with no warning of what to expect. I love the Coyote Gods site, but it's definately for those of us who look at coyotes as a true trophy.

I'm not one to jump on a man for what he does in his life, be it hunting, or anything else as long as it's not causing me any greif, but those guys take fur hunting very seriously, and they firmly believe in using the fur if you take an animals life. I believe in saving fur too, which is why I like the Coyote Gods site.

killdeer, take a look here for a friendly predator hunting site:

For more than a few reasons, I don't use the cg site either. MI VHNTR

Killdeer
It really doesn’t need to be expensive to get started. You allready own the right Clothing from your deer hunting. Some dark coveralls and a facemask & gloves Will work but you definitely need to get settled into the brush where your outline Is broken.

Your vehical needs to be out of sight.
Your nose need to be pointing into the wind.
You need good visibility to your right and left because the yotes are going to try to Circle downwind of you. I prefer a more open area on one side with an acceptable Shooting lane on the other.

Try to look at everything in particular and nothing in general. You will be surprised At how quickly you will be able to pickup motion. IF/When you move your head, pretend like you have a stiff neck.
Those yotes can be seen literally running on their bellies now & again. A lot of times they are making short dashes from cover to cover. I take them frequently in between these dashes when they look up out of a piece of cover that you would swear Wouldn’t hold a rabbit.

You should be able to purchase a call locally. Try a mouth call first but also get one with an instructional cassette/CD. Look for a cottontail squaller but don’t discount the howler calls. :D
