I'm relatively new to serious air gunning, still trying to learn about it. I bought one of the Turkish Winchester's in .22 when they first came out as a starter rifle. I worked over the terrible trigger and now it's a pleasure to shoot. Except I'm having trouble with accuracy and need to understand a few things about pellets.
What is "reasonable" accuracy from a cheaper rifle like my Winchester. I've so far tried only a few different pellets, just what's available locally. The Daisy flat pellets give me about 1" groups at 25 yards, the heavier Daisy and Crossman hunting pellets I've tried both open up to 3" to 4" at 25 yards. Is the 1" from the Daisy as good as I could reasonably expect?
I checked the diameters of the pellets, just for comparison. The Daisy flat and field pellets both seem to average around .222 for the skirt, while the Crossman's were .218. The Crossman pellets fit loosely into the chamber, sometimes actually falling down into it, while I have to push the Daisy's in. Does the fit into the chamber matter much as far as accuracy? I'm from the powder buring side of shooting, so I know how bullet-to-chamber fit matters in them, is it the same in air rifles?
I've seen a device for inserting pellets into the chamber on a couple of web sites. From the photo I couldn't tell much about how they work, but the maker claimed it improved accuracy. It wasn't very expensive, is it worth getting one? Could a person with reasonable skills and modest equipment make one?
