6 mm BenchRest
« on: October 09, 2005, 01:31:40 PM »
I was thinking of getting a 6mm bench rest in a  custom shop heavy barrel at 161/4". Has any one done much with this cartridge in a similar length barrel.

do a little reading here>> http://www.6mmbr.com/index.html
I think that ~16" will be less than great. My 6mmBR has a "short tube" at 24" but it'll shoot into .2
Most would say that you need 27 to do it justice.

But what do I know? I just got a 14" .204 Ruger barrel for my G2

You might want to ask around on 6br to see if you can find someone that has messed with the round in an xp 100, or a Striker. Most are 22s in either flavor (BR or PPC) but a 6mm would be great to have. I really love the round. Keep me posted

I have two 6BR's. One is in a Remington 722 with a 20" medium sporter contour the other is an XP-100 with a 15" medium / heavy barrel. The XP-100 is the most accurate gun I own Period. The barrel on the Xp started out as a Golden State Arms barrel that was a 243. I had it shortened, rechambered and insalled on the XP action. I shoot it in IHMSA silhouettes half scale and have not missed a target in a match in three years. I only shoot it twice a year but it is always up to the task.

I have not done much testing since I found a good load right away, and it does better than I ever expected. The rifle is a little more picky but works great as a short light deer rifle. I would have loved for Remington to chamber the 6BR in a Classic but that would have cost me some dough.

I say get one and enjoy yourself, I love both of mine. It's all about what you want to use it for. I think is is very efficient even in a short barrel and if you want a truely fun cartridge the 6BR is a great one. Light recoil, great accuracy and plenty of punch for deer to at least 200 yards with the right bullet. Buy Lapua brass, it's expensive but it is the best brass I have ever seen or used.

I really like them both. The rifle is a bunch of fun, but the XP is just incredible.

No need in making any kind of decision, I would recommend one of each. That would be the best choice.
Shoot well and shoot often.

A 16.25 inch 6mmBR will work great.  Even better in a XP
I have a 6mm-284 in a XP and it shoots great.

Most of the top BR 6mms have been in 20"-21" barrels.  They are the most precise rifles in existence.  A 16" tube will work very well.
