From 1936 through 1940 there was a federal program in place to interview old timers and transcribe their life stories to print.  This
http://memory.loc.gov/mss/wpalh3/34/3401/34010113.htm is Noah Armstrong's account of his childhood and service as a Texas Ranger.  His story very vividly portrays the animosity of post-Civil War white Texans toward black soldiers (as discussed in the Hardin thread), and lacks present day sensitivities regarding native Americans and Hispanics, so don't open the site if you think you will be offended.

The home site for American Life Histories is http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/wpaintro/wpahome.html.  There, under the “RANGE LORE” category, you can find many stories by people who lived the old west we are trying to relive.

:D Capt,
Great story!  I'm sending it to my hermano in San Angelo.  'Loved the ref. to Paint Rock, now, that's a real W. Texas town!   Many years ago, I parked next to the bank in that little burg on a rainy, dark evening, waiting to meet with some people.  I was dressed in a slicker and slouch hat, and the sheriff parked across the street watching me as if I were Cole Younger!  My party arrived and we forded the S. Concho (I think it was) to go fishing.  Man, I never before felt like I was a time-traveler!   I was just a Yankee sailor from Goodfellow AFB, with a new "war bride".   :-)
