Just traded in a Sako for a Danish rifle.

Anyone got advice for 150 Nosler bullets with IMR-4350 powder? All my loading data is thirty years old. I'm thinking of starting around 55grains for openers.

Good luck hunting!  >>>------------>

I recommend you use a starting load of 57.0 grain since that is the starting load shown in my old reloading book.  You wanna be cautious about using TOO SMALL a powder charge with any SLOW-BURNING rifle powder.  While IMR4350 USUALLY doesn't cause problems due to low loadings, it CAN happen, even with IMR4350.

My data is older than your’s… but IMR4350 hasn’t changed enough (if any) to be concerned about it.

My old reloading manual (circa 1970) shows a starting load for the 7X61mm Sharpe & Hart cartridge using a 150 grain bullet and IMR4350 to be 57.0 grains which should yield 2860 fps with a maximum load (63.0 grains-a compressed load) yielding 3140 fps.

My book also indicates an accuracy Load as being 57.0 grains of IMR4350 which is, of course, the "starting load".

HOWEVER… there was a “warning” concerning the “free-bore” of the barrel indicating that the test rifle was free-bored.   It goes on to say that if your rifle is NOT free-bored, then you MUST reduce your loads by a full 5% and even then, maximum loads should be approached with extreme caution.

For the traditional (for a 7mm) 139 grain bullet, the same book indicates that IMR4350 is probably the best powder with a starting load of 58.0 grains of IMR4350 which yields 2950 fps (this load is also the “accuracy load” for a 139 grain bullet) and a maximum load of 64.0 grains (a compressed load) yields 3260 fps, the highest velocity of any powder tested by more than 60 fps.

I noted that IMR4350 is shown as being the powder found to be the most accurate with every bullet weight tested (using “starting loads” in each bullet weight) including the 120 grain, 139 grain, 150 grain, 165 grain and the 175 grain bullets.  The same powder at maximum loads also yielded the highest muzzle velocity of any powder listed in each of the bullet weights tested.

It was also noted that these loads used Norma brass and Remington 9½ primers in a Shultz & Larsen 65DL with a 24” barrel using a 1:10 twist.

I hope this helps you…

Thanks Ron!

I did a cross reference with a newer Sierra manual. They listed 4350 as an accuracy load too. I sized and trimmed 20 cases then I loaded 60grains of IMR-4350 and the powder came almost up to the shoulder of the case. The Sierra book lists 62.1 as maximum for 4350. I serated the bullet for 3.2" OACL and they all feed perfectly through the magazine and they all chamber so I think they will shoot OK.

The only brass and loaded rounds made for this rifle come from Norma. They are based on the Holland and Holland case and share the same head dimensions in the book, but five of the twenty I sized did not fit the shellholder properly and took a bit of persausion to get in and out of the press. Once they went into the shellholder they did size nicely though.

The Shultz and Larsen rifle has the best feeding mechanism I ever seen or used and the trigger is superb. I think its going to be a real good shooter.

Check Ken Water's Pet Loads.  It included the 7x61, but he used a custom Mauser.  With the beautiful and slick Shultz & Larsen, there were supposedly some reports that with its rear locking lugs allowed a bit of springing and after a few loads there might be evidence of incipient case separation.  Just size enough for good function, don't automatically set the die against the shellholder.  Watch for any bright ring around the case a little ahead of belt.  Should you suspect this ring, any problem can be checked by feeling inside the case with the bent end of a straightened paper clip.  If you find one, its time for a fresh batch of brass.  Its just something to watch for, not to fear.  Even if this proves true, ditching brass after 5 reloads instead of 10 is a small price to pay for being able to use such a fine piece as the Shultz.

Thanks guys!

I have two boxes of 7X61Super cases which I loaded with 60grains of IMR4350 and a 150 ballistic tip.

I shot one box last week. They shot inside of an inch at 100yards.

The "Super" case hold about 5grains more powder than the original 7X61 case does.

I am curious what Hodgdon1000 would do with this round. My best groups with the 7Remington mag were with 154Hornady bullets and around 64grains of H1000.

I figure about 5grains less for the super cases and 10grains less for the original cases should work.

I will keep you informed.
