I think the concept would work well, a versatile above-ground cubby you could plant anywhere you can bed a foothold.
On a larger scale, I've seen it done with a 30 gallon or so black garbage can. Lay the can on its side on location, opening facing the line of travel, and run a layer of dry dirt from in front of the can back into the can itself. Some bait in back of the can, and a foothold bedded either in front of the can or in the dry dirt layer extending into the can itself. Just a big 'ole artificial cubby set for cats, coons, etc.
I don't see why that same concept wouldn't work with 5 gallon buckets or smaller, for small game.
