444 recoil ?
« on: November 01, 2005, 05:47:22 PM »
how bad is the recoil in one of this lever actions ? i would think it would be less then that of a 45-70.... right? But how is it compared to say a  winchester model 70  in 30-06?

What recoil??? (lol).  The only time any of my 444s thump me is when I'm shooting them from the bench.  And to tame recoil I use a shooting jacket and a PAST Recoil Sheild (best money I ever spent).

When I'm in the field it's as though the rifle doesn't recoil at all.  How does it compare to the 45-70....probably pretty much the same.  The factory 240s in the 444 seem to have a sharper recoil than the heavyweight cast slugs I prefer and they seem to recoil about the same as factory 06s.  At least to me.  HTH.  Mikey.

Rule of thumb:
"straight case very little recoil" & "necked case lots of recoil" Depending on the caliber of course.

The 444marlin even max loaded has hardley any recoil i don't notice any after shooting 338's & '06's all of my life.  Lets face it i haven't seen anything match a 12ga double barrel & bolt action with no recoil pad yet. My very first shotgun was a 12ga marlin 36" barreled goose gun.

Recoil can be mild to wild, some people really need to shoot a 444 loaded for bear, as they would have a different opion about recoil, factory ammo ain't bad even the 300gr Georgia Arms ammo is OK, but load that 444 with Big hardcast bullets around 2200fps and the game changes, you will dread pulling the trigger.

My experience with my 444 is that it's a real bear from the bench. In the field; even with 300gr+ bullets - NO PROBLEM.

One thing I've done that really tames the recoil is outlined here:

I have one in a 10" T/C Contender and I like it just fine. In the Guide Gun it's a piece of cake. For a little perspective I consider the .30-06 fairly hard on the shoulder.

I drilled two 3/4 holes in the stock as far as I dared and filled them with #9 shot then put tape over the holes and put a leather recoil pad on. Now feels less than a 30 30. It even balances better.

After the modification you accomplished what is the EXACT WEIGHT of your gun?

I do not know what it weighted before but now it weights 9#. I use a sling and I am use to heavy guns anyway.

I am fixing to go out in the shop in a little bit and add some lead to an 870 3 1/2 mag. for a buddy of mine. It is a kicking fool too with 2 oz. of shot. I will let you know how much I weight add to it when I get finished.

I'm back. I drilled one 3/4 hole over the stock bolt hole that is 3/4 also and filled them both with #9 shot. The 870 weighed 7.6 # now it is 8.12 # I can get 9 lbs easy if I open it up a little more.

Thanks Whip, I did the same with my wife's shotgun to tame the recoil; it sure helped.
