"THE" Pennsylvania Deer Rifle?
« on: August 25, 2005, 04:44:59 PM »
I'd like to hear from my fellow PA deer hunters, what's your favorite rifle for hunting deer here in Pennsylvania?

My personal favorite is my Remington 7600 pump carbine in .35 Rem. My rifle has a 18 1/2" barrel & is topped with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5X20 scope in Leupold QR bases and rings. This set up is just perfect for hunting the swamps & laurel thickets of WMU 3D (Pike & Monroe counties). This rig also does double duty as my bear rifle.

I'm either shooting handloads or Buffalo Bore's 220 gr. soft point load.

I also prefer the Remington 7600. Mine is the standard length 22" barrel, with a Bushnell 3x9x40mm scope. I have mine chambered in 30.06. I like to use factory loads with 165 gr. soft points. This combination of caliber and load delivers plenty of punch in both the mountains and open fields, and never fails to put venison in my freezer.

I shot my fair share of deer in Pike county PA. using the age old 30-30. My only modification was to add a Williams reciever sight. That and a box of 170 grain bullets did the trick for me.

Now out here on the great plains, my son uses it to shoot White Tail Deer and I use a revolver.

There is something to be said about simplicity.

I have always used bolt action centerfires.  That being said I think that a my .35 whelen will be ideal for all PA hunting for game animals deer and larger.

I think that a remington pump in .358 would be great.

I have to say that my favorite rifle to hunt with is my omega.

I use my Win model 88 in 308 with factory 150 gr. loads or my NEF .243 with handloads. Either on does a good job on deer. Or if I feel like hunting light, I carry my Contender in 7MM TCU. Excellent round for deer!

Hey loaded, did you get a doe tag for 3D this year?

I have two rifles that I use for hunting in PA.  One is a pre-64 Model 70 .30/06 rigged with a 6x42 Leupold scope.  The other is a Remington 7600 in .280 Remington.  On that rifle I have a Williams peep rear site and a fiber optic fire site up front.  I use the Model 70 more than the 7600.

I also prefer the .35 Rem when things are up close and personal.  I sometimes use a .308 or a .30-06.   If I go someplace where I was never at before I take the .30-06/165 gr until I check things out.  After the first time though I usually end up taking the .35 Rem Lever or the .308/ Bolt (150 gr) depending on the layout of the land.

I also use a .50 Spit-Patch and Roundball Flintlock (175 gr) for the late season, and I just got into .50 In-Line with 250 gr Mini-Balls for the early season.

I toyed with the idea of using a .444 but I don't like that much hamburger, so the .35 Rem with 200 gr Core-Lokt Roundnose suits me better.

I've used a Mark X Mannlicher bolt action in 270 winchester for years. I also have  Ruger 77 in 35 Whelan, but it's a little much for Whitetail. The 270 was great under the "old" system, because if I was driving, it meant I had my buck, and I wasn't carrying a 10 lb. rifle. I've just bought a Ruger 77 compact in 260 Rem, much lighter, since I'm now doing a lot more walking with the gun. If you like bolts, I don;t think you can beat the compact for PA Deer Hunting, in whatever caliber you prefer.

I would have to say, the most popular caliber that I have seen carried would either be the 30-06 or the .270

My Grandfather only ever used a 35 Rem until he couldn't go any more.  When I started hunting umpteen yrs ago I also picked the 35 Rem because where I go I don't get real long shots and it is quite efficient for Whitetail in Pa.   I have never had a shot of more than 70 yds in all those years and a deer has never ran more than 30 yds afterwards.

On the other hand I have helped two friends of mine pick out hunting rifles over the years.  Both only own one rifle and both wanted an all around caliber for anything up to a 850 lb Black Bear.  I steered both to a .30-06 and both seem happy with the choice.   I have at least one .30-06 and I really like it.  I also have an Uncle who swears by the .308 for deer in Pa.  I suppose it comes down to personal preference.

Without a doubt there are alot of .30-06's and .270's out there, along with so many other calibers that may be over powered and some under powered.  But there are just as many .30-30's, 35 Rem's and .32 Win's.  It all depends on how old and how experienced the hunter is.

One old WWII Vet I see every year at the range with his old Model 94 Winchester Lever Action and open sights keeps telling me "If you can hit the bottom of a five gallon bucket at 100 yds, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a deer."

I would definately have to say that for most Pa hunting, I would be best served with a pump or preferably a lever action 35rem.  Shotguns work well too.
Thanks,

I use Remington model 700 ADL in .308  Have taken several deer with it & a black bear!  Last year, I hunted with a sparkly new Marlin 1894C!  Went the whole season without seeing a deer, but the rifle is real handy to carry in the woods. Especially in the thick stuff, where I love to hunt!  Always this year!
Looking forward to the early muzzleloading season!
(Maybe I'll draw an elk tag this year!!! LOL)

I use a 1953 Model 99 "EG" Savage lever action rifle in .300 Savage caliber with my deer hunting in the Moshannon State Forest in Clearfield County.  My handloads give a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet a chronographed 2680 fps with 3-shot groups which average .7 to .75 inches @ 100 yards off the bench rest.

This hand-load gives my rifle a point-blank-range of 260 yards when sighted in 2.75 inches high at 100 yards.

I have only been hunting deer in PA for a couple of years.  Got my first one last year.  Used a 30-30 Marlin model 30AW w/ 3-9 x 40 scope.  I hunted the first year or two with my Rem. 700 BDL w/3-9 scope in .243 (my 'chuck gun) but find that I am restless and prefer to still hunt.  The Marlin is lighter and better handling.

Just bought a Ruger M77 stainless steel/laminated w/2.8-10 scope.  Will be torn on what to use this year.  I think it will depend on the weather and where I am hunting.

Wow, I feel like the odd man out. Here in Bucks County, the deer are plentiful, but the rifles are a no-no.

I grew up hunting deer with my Mossberg 500 12 ga w/ big pumpkin balls and a bead sight. This year I sold it and bought an H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe in 20 ga. Just ordered a Nikon ProStaff for it today as a matter of fact.

I am hoping to grow old with this new set up, and be able to take shots at deer way out in the fields.

I did buy a Marlin 336C in 35 Remington thinking I was gonna go upstate for deer or possibly bear... but you know how life is - family, work, etc. Owned the gun for about 6 years and only shot it a handful of times at the range. I sold that this year too for the H&R. So I guess you could say in terms of rifles, that is what I would have used.

When in Penn's woods, I carry the same rig that I got when I was still a young 'un living in PA, Rem 700 ADL 25-06 w/ 3x-9x Redfield Widefield. From the above posts, it looks like the Rem pump rifles are still very popular.

All Seasons:

NEF Sidekick .50
T/C Hawken Flintlock .50
T/C Renegade Caplock .50
T/C New Englander 12 gauge(other than big game for this one)

I have owned many .270-.30/30-.444 and.............

Sold all of my high powered rifles and am stricktly blackpowder now, with a couple of exceptions, my Marlin .22 and my Moddberg 500 12 gauge once and a while.

I did just buy an H&R BC .45/70, but plan on using blackpowder in the case.

I hunt mostly in Washington-Erie-Warren and McKean counties.

Jack.

Well I started out with a winchester 88 in 308 win  with a williams peep,  I then swiched to a Remington 760 carbine 308win topped with a leupold 3x.  Now my son has taken over the those two :) so now I have a guide gun in 45/70 with Ashley peep sight for rainy days and a TC encore in 308 with a leupold 1x4.

My dad was a singleshot man, and I grew up using them.  My last 13 years or so, I've used an NEF, which I"ve gradually customized over the years with a curly maple stock and steel, rather than plastic ,hardware in 45/70 loaded with either 300 gr JHP's or, lately, 400 gr speer flatnose.  Mounts a Leupold 2X-7X scope.  Killed a lot of deer with it hunting these thick woods where I"ve never shot over 100 yds.  I'm a still hunter, so a singleshot  isn't a handicap to me.  Before that, I used my Ruger #1 in 6mm Remington, loaded with 100 gr Nosler Partitions, for a total of 18 deer....none over 100 yds away.
My "really lousy weather...can't see schmidt" rifle is an old Krag set up with Williams guide sights, and 180 gr roundnoses.
