OK...Which one is next?
« on: March 14, 2003, 08:06:02 AM »
I would like a comparison of the following factory barrels.  Im looking for power, recoil and accuracy out to about 125 yards.

1.  15" 450 marlin
2.  15" 308 Win
3.  12" 480 Ruger

Looking mainly at deer, bear and maybe Elk

I'd go with the .308 Win.  Excellent round for all the game you have mentioned and can go beyond the range you mentioned...why limit yourself.....

I'd go with the .308 too over the others, especially if you want capability for everything from chucks to Elk. It has the long-range accuracy and power for both.
The first shot is the best shot, it may be your only shot!  Do it with a single-shot.

450 marlin is out. i don't like belted magnum cases for reloading purposes. my pick would be .308 for states that allow rifle calibers in handguns and .480 ruger for states that allow only straight wall cases.   hmmmm? that would be a good reason to get two barrels
the .308 would extend your range past 125 yards as long as you feel comfortable shooting that far. with 15" barrel guns you really need to use some sort of rest in the field. i find that to be no problem. either just use whats available such as rocks, trees, limbs, etc. or pack in a shooting stick. i made a set of homemade cross shooting stix from fiberglass tent poles. they work great. just join them with a piece of rubber hose 4" long. plans can be found in an article at www.handgunhunt.com. that is where i got the idea. 8)

handgunhuntr,  For the criteria you gave(power, RECOIL, accuracy), you have to pick the Marlin. It easily wins 2 out of 3 of your requirments.  But just what has your body done to you that makes you want to punish it so much.  I have punished my body for years(in lots of ways that we are not going to discuss) and now as I ease into seniority, I am paying dearly for it.  Some days it hurts just to hold my pistol, let alone shoot it. :(    :(    :(
