Peep sights or Fiber Optic for 50 Cal ML Encore?
« on: October 08, 2005, 07:15:10 AM »
I have one of the early 26" Encore 209x50 ML barrels, it came with the same rifle sights that the regular rifle barrels come with (the fold down rear), I was working on sighting in last night and ran out of adjustment and it is still shooting about 18" high at 100 yds.  I guess that is part of the reason TC went away from those sights.

Anyway, I need some different sights to make this work for me - I am considering 2 options either one of the Williams compact peep sights or getting a set of the TC Fiber optic sights that now come standard on the ML barrels.  I have never used peep sights before, but have heard good things about them.

I am looking for opinions / recommendations from someone who has tried either or both types of sights.  On the 26" 209x50 Encore Muzzle Loader Barrel.

Thanks,

I hate those fold-down sights.

The TC fiber optics are pretty nice.  I killed a deer at 100 yrds last year with them.  Very bright in low light.  They are brittle though.  A good smack and the FO insert will break.  I broke mine (front and back) last year when I dropped the barrel about 4" onto the muzzle while cleaning it.

Do both.  Put a fiber optic on the front and a peep on the rear.  See my post further down.  I am trying to decide if I want to do this with a 16" barrel or trade it on a 21".  I have a Marlin lever action and a 10-22 set up that way and I really like it.

Big Gun
Do like Doc T says!

I did that for the first 2 years I had my Encore 209X50!  That combo of the F/O front sight and the peep sight is almost as quick as the scopes with the F/O dot inside!  It's really quick to get on target!

I switched to a scope because I wanted to "possibly" shoot beyond 100 yards!  I still like my old sight system!

Good Luck;

Thanks for the input and advice, I went ahead and ordered the peep sight - I will give it a try first.  The info about the fiber optics being fragile kind of concerns me - I think I will try the peep sight rear with the existing front and see how that works out first.

Thanks,

I went to the peep site, since I can't focus on the reguler sites anymore, with or without my glasses.  When I went to take my muzzleloader certification I was shooting their gun with reguler sites and was unable to hit well enough to pass.  I finally convinced the instructor to let me shoot my Encore with peep sites and shot three inside the 10 ring and the other two touching the 10 ring.  They were impressed at the differance.  Trying to convince them to get some peep sites for some of their guns.

I put the peep sight on and got the gun sighted in - it is still a bit high at 100 yds even with the peep sight at the end of adjustment - but it will work.  Groups were pretty fair 2 - 3", plenty good for deer as far as I am concerned.
