454 Deer Load Confusion
« on: January 29, 2003, 02:38:27 AM »
Well , I have shot Winchester 260 Partion Gold, 250 Barnes XPB Handloads ,300 Hornady XTP Mags, and 230 Speer Gold Dot HP's,all Handloads except for the Winchesters that I got a great deal on.Now as far as accurate they all shoot excellent. I have shot deer (NYS) with the 300 XTP's not real impressed with expansion ,but they do work. I guess next year I will try 250 Barnes XPB ,even though G.B. tested them and did'nt think they would open up good. The Barnes MZ'S open like advertised in my muzzleloader, never lost a deer yet  :-D with them. Of course I am a much better shot with a long gun. Also am very anxious to try these Win. Part. 260. Both these bullets shoot very well at the bench,1 inch groups at 50 yards .I love this Raging Bull especially since putting the Halo sight on it. The best part of all this testing is they all shoot the same with no sight change, except for the 230 Gold Dots. witch shoot low and rt. about 3 inchs. Why do they not put a cannelure on this bullets ? Well guess I have rambled on long enough ,Boy deer season sure seems a long way off!

The 230 Gold Dots are intended for use in the .45ACP.  Hence the lack of a cannelure as this round headspaces on the case mouth.  I'd recommend you be very careful when using these bullets in full house loads for your Casull.  I do not know exactly what the top velocity these bullets are designed for, but I'd bet it's probably not what the Casull is capable of doing to it.

Hay WildBill - the Hitman is right about those 230 grain gold dots - they are not intended for the revolver and may not hold together and give you the penetration you want or need.  One problem you may encounter if using those bullets with top end loads is that they may 'walk' out of the cases and jam your cylinder under heavy recoil without a cannelure to help the crimp hold them in place.

My CRS is setting in and right now I do not recall the technical or correct name for the crimping die that would allow you to load straight walled bullets into those cases without the 'walking' problem.  It's not the roll crimp die or the taper crimp, it's the type of die the black powder shooters use with the 45-70 black powder loads.  I'll think of it.  It has a collet busing at the end that give the round the same crimp the factory puts on the case.

Gee, I was hoping I would be of some help here.  I'll try harder next time.  Mikey. :(
