Curious, which would be the better choice out of a 12-14" barrel? Would the recoil be about the same? I've shot the 30-30 with a 14" bbl, but I've never shot a 44.
The accuracy for me wasn't too bad at 100 yds, but I'm wondering if I would have better accuracy and more power at ranges within 150 yds. Most likely, 100 yds and under.
Or, should I just stay with the 30-30 barrel?

Al, I prefer the 30/30. You can load ballistic tips for the Contender and get great results out to 150 yds. I just didn't like the 44 in my Contender. I sold it and got a Ruger SRH in 44 for hunting in the woods.

I like my .45 Win Mag (similar to the .44 Mag) with iron sights for drives and close shots. For distances greater than 50 yds, I prefer a smaller faster bullet with less drop. The 30-30 is fine, I prefer the 7-30 waters.

either is great, but for the longer range, the 30-30 wins. recoil is a bit easier in the 30-30. i love the 44, but out to 150, the 30wcf is the ticket.

I don`t like eather round in a Contender. With rounds that recoil like these 2 do they eat up my middle finger. On the Encore frame eather would do a good job. You will have no porblems with the .44 mag. at 150 yrds., but that abt. the end of the road for it and the .30-30 will go alittle farther, but not alot. The recoil of the .30-30 is alittle less also, again not alot. Eather way you will need a rest to shot eather of thme with any accuracy at 150 yrds.

My Contender I use 15" 357 Max and 45-70. Encore, 15" 7mm-08 and 460 S&W.

I have both and like them the same. I would go with the .30-30 out to 150 yards. The .44 would be great at closer ranges. Here in Virginia the .44 Mag. would do well in our woods.

But then again, it boils down to your comfort zone. What is your favorite and which is more comfortable to handle and shoot. :wink:

I would go with the 30-30 and use Nosler 125 or 150 Ballistic tips. 14" barrel with good healthy and accurate load will easily take deer out to 250 yards. My 10" barrel with 2x leupold scope will topple silhouette rams at 200 meters with ease. Can easily keep the shots on silhouette chicken at same distance. My load is not as hot as others I've seen either. 44 will work, 30-30 is lots better and more versatile.
