Most Accurate .44.......
« on: October 18, 2005, 11:19:41 AM »
The S&W or Ruger thread got me to thinking about the different .44 magnums I own/have owned.  Although I hunt with my old scoped Ruger Super Blackhawk and I carried for a duty weapon one of my M29 S&W’s, the most accurate of all the .44 is my old Colt Anaconda.  My question is of all the .44 magnums you own or have ever owned, which make/model is the most accurate?  Lawdog

10" Contender. I've shot 1" groups at 100 yards with it. That's just a nice to have, though. I'm quite happy with 4" groups. However, it's the total package that matters. Handling, durability, sights, trigger, and other user features are just as important to me as accuracy. And it has to look good too.

Accuracy seems to be a code word for "I can't shoot but I want a gun that's inherently accurate to compensate for my lack of ability."

I have to agree. My contender is tops. Best revolver would be my 6" Anaconda also.   KN

that would be my freedom arms 44.    i shot a 1 hole group at 50 yards one day (i was having a really good day).

the rugers were pretty good, but the f.a. makes me look really good.

I've had some mighty accurate S&W .44 mags over the years but without a doubt the most accurate day in and day out is the TC with 14" barrel. The 10" are a close second but I think the 14" ones are even more accurate.

Of course the TC's would have an edge, but let's talk revolvers here.  I have a Freedom Arms in .44 done up as a Stalker by Ken Kelly of Mag-na-port.  I have a 2 1/4" 100yd group shot in front of witnesses from that gun.  The gun will do that all day long, but I have to be at my best.  44 Man

The only .44 revolver I have owned is my 7.5" barreled super redhawk and it seems to be very accurate. 2" groups at 50 yards with a red dot and just about any ammo. It would probably be even more accurate with a scope and some magnification, but the accuracy I get is more than adequate for any hunting I will do with it. If I wanted a super accurate .44, I'd order a barrel for my G2 and scope it.

Good shooting,
Brian

toss up between the accusport bisley and the 629 4 inch I have now. Ive gone through many 44 mags but these two would take a truck load of money to get them out of my hands.

It's a tie between my 10" Contender and 15" Encore.  Both will shoot ragged holes with the right loads.  The 10" Contender hurts to shoot compared to the Encore, but I like the way it handles a lot better.

Armory414:
I put Pachmayr grip and foreend on my 10" Contender and it made a good difference. It really tamed it down. The combination of a wider piece of rubber in the web of my hand and a heavier foreend is a significant improvement.

Questor,

I tried that once, and it helped, but I really like the feel and look of the Herrett grips that are on the Contender now.  One of my winter projects is to alter a second Herrett grip that I have by routing out some of the wood and adding in some neoprene from Texas Knife supply.  Hopefully that will make a difference.  As it is now it's not a problem for hunting.  I've used the 10" .44mag with great success on groundhogs, but when I shoot a box and a half through it at targets my hand is bruised for a couple days!  I have padded gloves that I wear for now.

My other winter project is to build a Herrett-style grip for my Encore.  I really like having the thumb shelf as it gives me better control on the gun.
