22 conversion for government frame
« on: February 14, 2006, 12:15:33 PM »
Hey guys

I have a request for my brother. Hope I posted it in the right forum.

(I posted this originally in the gunsmithing forum then notcied this forum and thought maybe someone here might be able to help me out)

He has an extra Government 45 acp frame and he wants to get it converted to 22LR. and he said he wants a steel converion unit for it, and not one of those Aluminum/ Alloy kit ones.

Anyone here know of a good source for them, or can reccomend a good unit made by someone for the 22 conversion? If so please post links here for me and I will relay the info to him. Also if anyone has one they might like to sell that is a good one let me know also by sending me a private message here at graybeards and/or posting it here too for me.

Thanks Guys

I don't think there are any. The closest one I know of is the Marvel with the compensator option to get the weight close to the 1911 45.

You can still pick up the original Colt 22 Conversions.  They are on eBay all the time.  You should be able to get one for $300-$350 if you are patient.

The other alternative is to get a Marvel.   Its much more accurate, and only part of the slide moves during firing, so it doesn't take the beating that Ceiners and Kimbers do.  I think that its pretty close in weight to a steel slide.   A lot of Bullseye shooters use Marvels for the rimfire competition.

:D Thanks alot guys for the info.  I will pass it along to my brother and he can decide what he wants to do.  He sia he heard of a steel unit made by some guy in Montana but he didn't give me the guy's name, so I'm not sure who makes the one he was looking into recently.

Once again thanks guys I appreciate, you all are a great bunch of guys here. It's like family here to me.

I've owned 9 of the Colt units ove the years.

Almost half of them had to have their barrels and floating chambers replaced. Colt doesn't service them anymore. the barrel and chamber are $200 from Numrich (last I checked). Colt got sloppy and would not maintain adequate quality control on the fit and alignment of the floating chamber with the barrel.  The result is that tiny particles of lead build up in the gap between the front of the chamber and the barrel. In severe cases, using unplated .22 ammo, it can lock up the chamber in a mere 50 rds. A good .22 unit will go 1000+ rds of plated ammo before needing a scraping of the chamber and its recess.
