7.62x39 and hogs
« on: September 14, 2005, 07:02:15 AM »
Anyone ever take a hog with this round?

I have a Ruger #1 chambered for this cartridge, and wondered if it would be a good cartidge for it. As a handload proposition it can equal a 30-30 and surpass it at 200 yards. I know some people have used it for deer with great success.

I was thinking that 150 gr. bullet would do the trick.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

John

I think that if you place your shot right, it's as good as any other game rifle.

If you are worried about whether it's enough gun, look at this:

This guy took this hog with a .223.

That's a 500-lb hog.

Most compare the 7.62x39 to a .30-30.  If a .30-30 is your benchmark, then let me tell you that the old .30WCF will kill a hog dead.

But again...SHOT PLACEMENT

I think it would do. I would load some Nosler partitions for it.

Thanks for the info.

I was pretty sure the 7.62x39 would be enough, but I really wanted to see if anyone else used one. I have yet to go on a hog hunt, but when I do, I want to use my Ruger #1.

I took a 300 lb. hog with my Ruger mini30 (7.62x39) with a single shot behind the ear. The hog dropped on the spot, kicked acouple of times and passed on. Not that it was agreat shot or anything being as the critter sauntered right underneath my ladder stand. Was kind worried it would rub the leg of my stand though. Also have taken deer with lung shots - 7.62x39 put 'em down.
