Hi
I have a chance to buy a new made Remington Rolling block Silouette Rifle and would like to know what their quality of them is like.

                                                                             Thanks

The last SHOT Show I attended was in 2002 & @ that show as well as the previous shows, I examined the Remington Rolling Block rifles on display @ the Remington Booth.

Comparing them to those made by Lone Star & the Lone Star that I have, I would say buy a Lone Star. Fit & finish is just better on the Lone Star & it is all made in good ol' USofA.  Dave H. will make you what you want.

A few weeks ago, there was a thread on the Remington RB actions on the MSN BPCR Board:

http://groups.msn.com/BPCR/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=24042&LastModified=4675539036017120327

For some reason, there seems to very little mention of these rifles on the various BPCR boards. Shooters inquire 'bout them, but I've seen very few posts from Shooters who actually have or shoot them.

Rem Rolling Block

My Shooting Pard shoots 2 of the new model Rem RBs (45-70 & 45-90) and they are good looking rifles & good shooting, But I think there are a few questions about them. The fit & finish & the barrel that they use are not up to the price they charge.

I would check with Lone Star and compare $$ before buying a New Model REM......... :D
I spent a lot of money on Guns, Wild Horses & Wilder Women but I guess I just wasted all the rest!

rk4570: your description fits the Remington RB's that I saw @ the SHOT Shows to a "T".

I just don't understand why Remington doesn't do a better job on the 'new' RB's, esp. since the RB put  Remington on the map & kept the Comp. afloat.

I had opportunity to examine the Remington Rolling Block rifles on display at the 2003 and 2004 SHOT shows.  To say that the fit, finish and quality was disappointing is an understatement!

The upper-end Italian products (Pedersoli, etc) were vastly superior for the same or less money.  Ditto for the Lone Star line.

Come ON, Remington!  You invented, produced, and dominated the world's market for the BEST and most numerous single-shot military/sporting rifle in the 1863-1900 period! Over 60 years of continuous production.  PLEASE don't let the bean counters and mediocre customer support weinnies ruin what should be an outstanding encore for the BPCR shooters!

John: I have never been able to understand the dismal quality of 'new' Remington pattern RBs.

These rifles are a much higher price than the spaghetti rifles & are on a price level w/ Lone Star. But the quality is way below Lone Star  & the Italian RBs.

I think that Remington maybe sells to a market that only knows of the Italian rifles, but wants an American rifle, & is totally ignorant of Lone Star presence & quality & what a 'real RB should look like?....

Allow me to add my 2 cents.

About the only way you are going to get a Remington RB that is reasonably made with good fit & finish is to purchase one of the limited editions made by their Custom Shop.  They come with very nice wood, a shotgun buttplate, checked pistol grip & forearm with a case hardened receiver.

You may remember Remington reintroduced the rolling blocks in 1997 with the sales of limited edition versions they called a commemorative rifle.  The MSRP at the time was $2,799.  Over a two-year span a small quantity was manufactured in their Custom Shop. It came in a very nice rifle case with front and rear vernier sights.  I've seen one for sale now and then.  I also seen the same rifles for sale without the rifle case leading me to believe that Browning is still making or made a few now and then.  These generally run in the neighborhood of $2000 to $3000 depending on accessories.

Concerning their "standard" production rifle, I agree with the general consensus, they look like poo poo compared to the custom versions and rifles from other custom suppliers.

If I were to purchase a NEW Rolling Block it would probably be from Lonestar.

But until then, I'll stick with my original 1876 #1.
