One more reason to wear eye protection
« on: October 16, 2005, 04:57:12 AM »
I was at the range shooting the Buckmark 22 the other day and got an amazing blow back of fragments when I fired one particular round. I don't think it was over charged, but one even managed to somehow fly back and hit me forcefully on the lip. How that happened I'll never know because I was shooting one handed in the fashion of bullseye shooters. Nevertheless it could have been painful if had hit me in the eye. Other pieces hit my hand as if it were chunks of dirt in the powder.

I just started wearing shooting glasses this year.  There are quite a few shooters of older military rifles at the range I use.  I've seen two of the rifles give out in the past year.  It sure isn't pretty.  No really serious injuries but scary.  Most of these guys are experienced shooters and careful.  I guess you never can tell.  I'd rather opt for a little more safety.  Best wishes.

As an interesting post mortem to this I found that the debris is actually bouncing off the wall and hitting me. It's an indoor range with smooth panels to the right of the shooter. The case hits the panel hard enough to bounce it back to the left side of the shooting bay. Perhaps some things are being dislodged in the process and that's how I'm getting hit even though I'm standing directly behind the gun.

This only happens with this particular gun, a Buckmark 22.

On Saturday a shooter had the misfortune to blow up a single shot 45-70.  Wasn't there when it happened so I don't know the particular rifle he was shooting, but I do know it wasn't a #1.   Sunday morning when I got to the range, there was a piece of forestock three lanes down from where he was sitting. It also peeled the barrel back from the report I got. Fortunately he and neighbors were not hurt, only shaken up a bit  He swore to the RO the ammo was factory, but didn't have a box for the rounds, then lelft in a hurry.  Wished I'd stayed around, it occured about an hour and a half after I left.

If I had just blown my gun up in front of spectators, I'd be red from head to toe whether or not I was bleeding and whether or not it was my fault.  I'd be leaving on the first boat out too, no hanging around to chat it up for me.

I'd be leaving for a change of clothes! Something like that would cause me to mess my shorts, whether it was me or someone else at the range while I was there.

Maybe I get a few snickers at the range but I generally wear my glasses (safety shield prescription) along with a pair of clear goggles when shooting. The extra layer and side protection is also useful in case something happens at the adjacent bench.

He or she who does not wear eye protection while shooting any firearm is very foolish. Yes, alot of poeple don't wear any but, it could be a matter of time. Why be the foolish one, YOUR CHOICE.

Maybe I should have added "secular" to the request.  :)
