There are separate load data for IMR and Hodgdon powders.  IMR4350 and H4350 do not have the same burn rates.

IMR 4198 and H4198 are not the same either. Maybe the burn rate is the same, but the powders themselves behave differently. The difference is quite apparent in .221 Fire Ball.

Always follow reloading data precisely and do not substitute ANYTHING unless the powder company has told to that you can, or if you have very carefully worked up loads with each powder and compared the differences in pressure.  But then....your face, your eyes and your life are in Your own hands.  Reloading can be very dangerous with just one little mistake...but to take chances and guess about loads is downright STUPID.  Do NOT DO IT!

Are Pontiac's and Oldsmobiles "the same"? When the two powders have the same number Hodgon's tends to be a bit slower. IMR 4831 seems awfully like H4350 in my rifle.

From what I've read, they two companies (IMR & Hodgdon) will be totally independent of each other.  So nothing has changed between the powders.

From what I've looked at, the biggest thing that IMR and Hodgdon share is the Web site layouts -- Very convenient when looking up laods for different powders. But the powders themselves are still different, even if they have similar names.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

I agree
What is the sense in preserving collectible items just so they can be auctioned off by uncaring heirs for their pecuniary value ? I am inclined to believe that vintage cars are to be driven, old wine is to be drank, and fine guns are to be shot.

My understanding is that there will be no changes made to the IMR line of powders.  Thus far I haven't seen any differences to the IMR powders.  Of course it's difficult to say what will happen further down the road.  "Never" is a long, long time.  I'm hoping there are no changes.  Best wishes.

Its also much easier it is to replace excess powder into those big round bottles, than the metal cans with the small caps.
