I need opinions on a unit to get me from point to point while hunting and fishing to be used in conjunction with my compass. Could you advise relative merits of etrex, etrex legend and GPS 72 or any others to consider. I want to stay under $175.00 if possible. Ease of operation would be important to me.
Thanks,
Don

I think your second selection is good.  It comes with a good base map and related information the other two units do not have.  I have worked side by side with the GPS 72 unit and my Legend loaded with USA Topo MapSource software.  When geocaching or creating tracks around your hunting area the Legend gives you more information to work with.

There are a couple locations on the Internet where you can buy it for $149.00+.
There is a learning process to effectively using a gps.  Do not throw your compass and map away!

I've used an E-trex legend for several years now.........it has more memory and capability than the plain E-trex.......it's size is good as it fits in a shirt pocket........I too, also carry a compass.......So cast my ballot for the E-Trex Legend........

A Garmin Geko 101 for $90, a Magellan eXplorist 100 for $95, or a Garmin eTrex for $100 will do that.  If you ain't gonna use the extra bells and whistles, why buy them?  I personally find the Magellan eXplorist 100 very easy to use.
