What's the most expensive 1911 out there?
« on: January 13, 2005, 05:59:28 AM »
I keep seeing the prices go up uP UP for high-end 1911s. I think the new S&W competition variant goes for about $2600. Good heavens! What can make it worth that much?  Excluding collector pieces and fancy 1911s that have been worked over by Tiffany to encrust them with jewels and gold, what are the most expensive 1911s you're aware of? Got a Web link so I can have a look?

This conversation kind of reminds me of the Depression era story of the guy selling apples on the street. He had one for sale at $10.00.
Guy asked; "How many do you expect to sell at that price?"
Answer "Don't have to sell but one."

They are all getting really out of hand, but I saw a Les Baer for over $3,000.00!  I'm sure that they are nice guns, but....

I've seen them priced in excess of $5K but that was for the special edition, engraved, special serial number, with an autographed photo of Monica Lewinsky in the buff.  A regular edition high end gun can cost up to about $3K.

It dosen't matter how much you pay. The most expensive is the one that dosen't work when you really need it to.

Wilson pays their people $8.00 an hour to make those $3000.00 wonder pistols after they give them 3 weeks of training.  I know because I laughed at the production manager when he called me for an interview this year. Granted, they're great handguns, but sheeesh, about a $1000.00 overpriced - at least.  To quote the man who does the hiring at Wilson Combat,  "I'm gonna hire the first two guys who even look like they can do the job."   What does that tell ya?

Wilsons are nice, but they aren't even in the same ballpark as a Valtro, or a John Jardine custom built on a Valtro. Of course, you don't have to put a second mortgage on your home or raid your kid's  college fund to own a Wilson.

Of course most people can somehow get by shooting trap with a browning shotgun instead of buying a Perazzi.

I won't spend more than $500 on one thats my limit.  I could spend more but its not worth it for one gun.  I see the prices on some of the used stuff going much higher lately too mainly pistols.  The only thing thats used and cheap is the blued revolvers. I picked up a used norinco 1911a1 45acp thats one of the best 45's i have ever shot.

The best buys on the market for a no frills just a 45acp shooter right now to me are;

Auto Ordnance Army (WW2 copy) 1911a1 45acp $391
Springfield Armory (WW2 copy)  1911a1 45acp   $419

While some of these were cheap some aren't right now.

Rock iland armory 1911a1 45acp                         Prices vary
Charles Daly 1911a1 45acp                                 Prices vary
S.A.M. 1911a1 45acp                                          Prices vary

Dane Burns, Teddy Christianson, Yost and Bonitz are but a few of the real custom guys. their stuff may take 4 years, depending on the stuff you want, and cost $4000-up, though $2500 will get a good working piece.
STI and SV--I know cause I am looking down the barrel, Is going for $2100 + for  a 9x23 or super .38. You can get a first class weapon from STI in a plain package for $900+.
Good weapons all, and, really if you look at the time on the project and the quality it is not bad.
Depends on whether you want your hooker classy or not.
