opinions on duofold
« on: October 11, 2005, 08:10:27 AM »
I'm thinking about getting some real genuine red long johns for this deer season. I see that Duofold makes two styles of wool union suit. The lightweight one has an all cotton inner layer and a 25% wool outer layer. The heavier ones are the same but with a 40% wool outer layer.

The cotton concerns me a bit. I'm wondering why there is so little wool in the outer layers. I'm also wondering if anybody makes an all wool non-duofold union suit any more. I don't want to spend $200 on a filson set though, so low price is also a concern for me. Maybe I will just have to get the duofold and give it a try for myself.

I use the lightweight duofold.  With the exception of long hour on a treestand I can't think of a reason for the hevier stuff.  The lightweight stuff will have you sweating in no time.  If it's really, really, really, cold (teens or less with strong wind) I'll go with the thinsulate and a double layer of duofold.

There is nothing better than duofold.

Thanks dukkilr, it's always nice to find a review from the field by someone who has worn it. Makes another persons purchacing decisions a bit easier.

In viewing Duofolds website, it says that Cabelas carrys it, buy I'll be darned if I can find it. You got a page number from either the hard cover or soft cover catalpg?

I got my first set of DuoFold underware when I was but a boy close to 50 years ago I'd guess. With it on I never felt cold. Ah to be young again and invulnerable.

I cannot stand wool next to my skin so the cotton sure feels nice. BUT in wet conditions that cotton holds water and doesn't wick it very good so it's not the greatest under such conditons.

Duofold has now come up with a new fleece underware that is just absolutely outstanding. Mine is black, not sure if it comes in other colors. No matter how cold the day the stuff feels like a heater next to your skin and wicks water away so it works just as well when sweating. It's all I use these days. Nothing better that I've found.

I would stay away from the Duofold union suit with the cotton inner layer.  They are fine if you are just going between your car and a building, but are really not serious outdoor gear.

Stanfield's makes a 100% merino wool union suit, style 4300.  Merino wool can be worn against the skin without itching.  You can order directly from them if your order is less than $100 US.  Call (902)895-5406 or email at inquiries@stanfields.com

Stanfield's also make a heavyweight wool union suit but, as it is worsted wool, you would probably have to wear a light synthetic under it, unless you don't mind the itch.  Lightweight Comfortrel long underwear tops and Lightweight Comfortrel long underwear bottoms from Sierra Trading Post are a great base layer.

Depending where you are in the UP, a drive to Sault St. Marie, ONT might get you into the Stanfield's as well.

I think I will give the duofold a shot first. When I hunt I either sit and watch trails or still hunt. I'm never more than an hours walk from the truck, or deer camp. My other hunting garb consists of Codet melton wool pants and vest, a Woolrich plaid shirt, and a wool mackinaw coat. I have hunted in this wearing boxers and a t-shirt underneath before, but I think the slight added warmth of the duofolds will make things a little more comfortable when I am sitting still for long periods. If they don't work out I'm not out much and I can always get the all-wool ones later.
