Chamber Adaptors
« on: October 26, 2005, 02:27:23 AM »
I am interested in picking up a chamber adaptor for two of my rifles, a 308 Ishapore and a M48 8x57.  I have the ability to cast bullets for these rifles and create reduced loads, it's just that sometimes I would like the convenience of being able to plink/practice with off-the-shelf ammo.

In my search I found two types of adaptors:  The first is a typical conversion adaptor, making a smaller cartridge, with a bullet of the same size as the barrel, fit the chamber of a larger rifle.  These adaptors can be seen at: http://www.mcace.com/.

The second type uses the .22 blanks for power-actuated tools and fires a small lead projectile (ball) loaded into the front of the adaptor.  These are sold at: http://www3.telus.net/gamegetter/.

I am hoping to hear from people who have had experience with either of these types of chamber adaptors and what kind of success they have had.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim B:  In addition to my response to your post in one of the other forums I reread your initial post and saw that you had included the 8mm Muaser round in your search for chamber adapters.

You will have much better luck with chamber adapters and the .308 bore.  The 8mm is a .323 bore and I haven't found any pistol or revolver cartridges in that bore diameter that would work in an 8mm.  I did find, in my older Lyman manual, a number of cast bullets for the 8mm bore, running from 103 gns to 243 gns, but those are for the rifle.

If you want to shoot subsonic type loads through your 8mm, I would suggest the heavy slugs at very low speeds.  When I was firelapping some of my rifle bores, the literature provided indicated I should use a very small charge (4-5 gn) of fast buring powder (I chose Unique) held in place by the polyester stuff they make quilts from (fiber bat fill??).  I followed the instructions and had a blast using those light loads.  The polyester also helps clean the barrel after each shot so if you are using really soft slugs it helps with the cleaning process.

You can get a whole bunch of adapters for pistol cartridges for the .308 bore (308/06/ etc.) but it doesn't look like their is much available for the 8mm unless you make up your own wildcat chambering (I would go the heavy slug/subsonic route myself or fiddle with expanding a 32-20 case or wildcatting with a necked down 38/357 case).  HTH and Just a thought.  Mikey.

Mikey:

Thanks for your comments.  The true cartridge adaptors do not seem well suited to the 8x57 (no appropriate pistol cartridge).  However, the game getter (http://www3.telus.net/gamegetter/) uses 00 buckshot or a .350 round ball swaged to size as a projectile - seems like it should fit the 8mm bore pretty well.

Do you have any experience with the gamegetter?

Jim

If your going to go to all that trouble it would be just as easy to load cast bullets at squib loads or mild loads. Ask the guys at http://castboolits.gunloads.com

They have a wealth of shooting milder loads and regular cast loads. If you wanted to shoot buckshot you could right out of the 8mm case I would bet folks have been doing that with the 45/70 for years.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
