Who Uses Bore Buttons?
« on: February 16, 2006, 12:26:29 PM »
I was just wondering how many of you use bore buttons /aka/ wonder wads.  I  use them under a patched round ball. Alot of my friends don't. I find that they help me shrink my group sizes and that I don't have to clean between shots as often. I know that they are a bit costly but I don't mind....Jim

Get or make a punch the right size and then get some felt at a craft store and make your own a heck of a lot cheaper and works just as good. might be a bit thinner but they still work fine or keep your eyes peeled for old beat up felt hats. Just melt the lube you want to use with them and soak them in the lube take out and put in a container. Works good and you can get a big supply a lot cheaper this way. I try to shoot as cheap as I can with my muzzle loaders that includes making my own bullets/conicals and balls. That also means my own lubes and moose milk too and the felt wads.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I use Oyoke wonderwads under every high power (hunting) load I shoot...both PRB and the occasional Maxi-Hunter...best things since sliced bread...they are pricey but after sighting in a hunting rifle and taking a couple shots during hunting season, a couple bags last a long, long time...

(Claims that 1:48" twists won't shoot PRBs accurately are old wives tales!!)

Like jh45gun, I cut my own felt wads. I use them with all my loads.

I heard someone say that  a 1 in 48 twist won't shoot round ball accurately once, I think he was from Florida. To bad someone forgot to tell the guys up at "Thompson Center" that because all of their 1 in 48's are tac drivers........go figure?

Well the standard thinking on this is that the 48 is a compromise twist that you can use for roundballs or conicals and that it does ok with both though a fast twist is better for conicals and the slowertwist for roundballs. That said some 48 inch twist with the right loads shoot roundballs very well as conicals you just got to find the right load. Nothing from what I have read about these muzzle loaders seems to be set in concrete. I read about folks that have ball shooters that can shoot conicals well and about fast twist guns that shoot balls well.  Guess it all boils down to what you got and expirementing with loads to make that gun shoot what you want to shoot and if your lucky it will. I have also read of guns that did not shoot either real well but still was ok in the accuracy dept. As in centerfires some guns are just more accurate than others for some reason though two may be alike same model ect  and shot with the same loads.

I use 'em in my 54 caliber caplocks under Maxi hunters and Maxi Balls. I like bore buttons! I haven't tried them with PRB loads, but I'll see what happens.
