Firing pin strikes edge of primer. Potential problem?
« on: October 24, 2005, 09:17:01 AM »
Guys,
I went out to the range on the weekend to try some recent barrels from H&R. One of them is a 20" 223 I got for my 11 yr old son to shoot. I shot some factory PMC, and Wolf ammo to try it out. It has some accuracy potential, but one thing I noticed caused a question to pop up in my mind.

The firing pin hits near the edge of the primer at the 1 o'clock position.

In the following pic, the case on the right is from the new 20" barrel, the one on the left is from a 223HB Ultra I was also shooting. As you can see the firing pin hit on the right is near the edge, the other one is pretty much centered.

My question: Though none of the rounds failed to fire, I am wondering if hitting on the edge of the primer like this may lead to some kind of undesireable result in the future?

If nothing else, I wonder if it is worth notifying H&R because the primer hits on the the other two barrels (30/30 and 357mag) that I got for this frame are centered. The 223 barrel seems to be not as precisely fitted.

Cheers
Kerry

I don't think I would worry as long as it is tight.  Looks like both are slightly off to the right some, one just a little more than the other.  I just got back a RF barrel from them they fitted to a frame, and it looked like they had fit it with a rat tail file, good thing I was fitting it to a centerfire frame and I needed to take a little more off the hinge and could clean it up.  I don't think they take much time fitting these barrels really, and the workmanship on the hinge is kind of sad. I would think that as long as it can't drift any further off center (and I don't see how it can) that it won't present a problem.i've got a couple different guns that don't hit dead center and all shoot fine and have for years
Good shot placement + well constructed bullet = DEAD

kerry check the weld on the under lug of the barrel i saw a .223 doing the same it turned out to be a lump of weld on the right hand side of the barrel.it was an easy fix by a gun smith.hope this helps.
