Anyone shooting the NO EXCUSE bullets
« on: August 29, 2005, 01:43:35 PM »
I ordered a box of the 460 gr bullets for my Huntsman and took it to the range Yesterday.  This is the first time I've used cast bullets but it seemed to me that they fit really loose in my barrel.  And I could not get a good group so I swicthed back over to my usual sabot round and I was shooting a good 1 in group at 50 yards.  So I Decided to try a wonder wad behind the bullet, it did help some but still couldn't get anything close to a good group. oh.. yeah I backed down to a 75 gr load of Pyrodex Select.  Still had the bullets flying all over the place.  Am I doing something wrong ???Well I guess I can always melt them down and make wheel weights.

Dave,

My Huntsman loves the 460gr No Excuses! I shoot them with 70-75 grains of 777 in either FFG or FFFG. I also shoot the old White Super Slug in 430 grain.

Did you get the standard ones in .503 or did you ask for the ones in .500? You want the ones in .503. My bore on my Huntsman is .5025 and the .503's are almost a slip fit like the White System. You will find that your gun will shoot better if the barrel has been fouled by either a squib load or a full house load. After that don't even think about swabbing between shots if you are shooting for groups. If you are trying to find a hunting load then you would either hunt with aq fouled bore or find out the POI with a clean bore.

Back off on the select to about 65-70 grains or even 60 and work back up until groups open up. Try 777 if you have it or an FFFG grade of black or Pyrodex P. The big slip fit conicals need a fast powder to obturate the bullet into the rifling. Don't give up on 'em just yet, there is a load they will like if you take the time to find it. Good Luck!

Busta,

Think for the info.   Yes I ordered the standard .503 460 gr bullets.  I went out and got some triple 7. I back the load down to 60gr.  Shot five shots with 60gr the groups were tighter.  They got better the more the barrel got fouled.  I moved up to 65gr and five more shots the fliers actauly reduced some.  I decided to try a wonder wad under the bullet with 65gr.  Man what a differents.  No fliers and I'm hitting 2 1/2 in high at 50 yrds.  But I was concerned that 65gr might not be enough to take down a deer effectively. So I workd up to 70gr with the wonder wad.  Hitting 3 in high at fifty yrds  I tuned the scope and am now putting a tight cover leaf group of 1 in. 2 inches high at fiffty yrds.

Thanks again

I had great results with the No Excuse bullet, I found that 60gr. of 777 worked the best. Here is a pic to check out.http://images.snapfish.com/344%3A579523232%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2356%3D479%3D42%3C%3DXROQDF%3E2323%3A%3B%3B6634%3A3ot1lsi

Congrats again Dave! I knew you would find something that would agree with the 460 No Excuses. What load did you finally settle on? Powder? Wad? Clean or fouled bore?

I have shot 70-75 grains by volume of 777 FFG in the past but bought some 777 FFFG before going to Colorado and can shoot 80 grains with both the 460 gr  NE and the 430 gr White SS. I shot the 5x5 in my avatar with the 430 gr White Super Slug, .518" diameter .060" thick gasket wad on top of 80 gr 777 FFFG in a clean bore. The NE shot just as good though.

These Huntsmans/Sidekicks are the best value in muzzleloading, just wish they would make a better BP tool. I now have the .25 ACP conversion and dont miss the blowback or old BP tool one bit.
