Grips

I am a couple of days of getting a hunting handgun--either a 44 mag or 41 rem mag in either a Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk or a S&W 629 or 657.  One obvious difference in these guns is the grip.  They feel VERY different in your hand.  Give me the pros and cons for western style grips (Ruger) vs. the rubber molded type grips (S&W).

The only advice I can offer is pick the grip you feels the best in your hand. I would also recommend that you try to grip the gun with the style of gloves you plan to hunt with. They do make a difference.

I have small hands, and prefer small grips.

The normal recoil reaction to firing a magnum single action revolver is to have the revolver rotate upward in your hand.  The normal recoil reaction for a S&W is to recoil straight back and then up.  I have found the da/sa grip on the S&W to be easier to control and those revolvers easier to bring back to poa for the 2nd shot.  HTH.  Mikey.

They're supposed to be different, and it's more than the grips. The configuration of each gun is different too. The single actions have barrels higher in relation to the grips and tend to recoil with a good deal more muzzle flip. The double actions tend to recoil rearward more forcefully. Neither is better, but they are different.  My issue with wooden single action grips is that they're slippery and don't fit my hand. I do, however, like rubber grips on a Ruger, like those made by Pachmayr.

I have the rubber grips on my Ruger new model colt 45 and my Redhawk 44 mag. My S&W 500 8 3/8" has those rubber grips with finger groves. They shore help with the recoil. :D
