My new boar mount, the one I took at Wilderness Lodge in Tennessee last June arrived yesterday. It looks really good on the wall with the others. It was smaller than the others on my wall, and to be honest, gave me a whole new respect for the smaller ones. Those 1 1/2 inch tusks are sharp as all get out! Not that the longer ones are not sharp, THEY ARE! But those little ones are like razors... I'm happy with it! Here is the boar before we dressed it out...

Yeah, I will get one eventually... I want to take a picture of that entire wall... however, the mount looks exactly like the real life picture... They did a good job with it...

Remington 700 in .30-06 using a handload with IMR 4064 powder and a Sierra Pro Hunter bullet... Here is the recovered bullet:

Actually, that recovered bullet doesn't look that bad at all considering that it is a conventional non-premium bullet. Still, I would rather use Barnes X bullets on hogs. In my 30-06 I use the 165 Xs and in my 300 I use the 180 Xs. They are awesome bullets on hogs!

Yep! If you go to my webpage, the boar in the top picture was taken with a Barnes XBT 180 grain...

About Sierra, that is one bullet I refuse to use on game and I am very suprised that the bullet is in as much tact as it is. I have had the lead pop the jacket from low velocity 35 Rem loads with their Pro Hunter 200. Darn shame because I found no bullet in the Rem that was as accurate.

My Bro-In-Law swears by Sierra, and so do a lot of other folks I know. Myself, I will not tolerate a bullet that pops the jacket regardless of what it runs into for bone or muscle.

I notice even Nosler with the reputation they have with their Partition (Which I trust to the nth degree as I have used them much) is shifting to the bonded core to jacket bullets. Hornady is doing the same in spite of their good success with the Interlocks.

Jack Carter did a wonderful thing IMO when he made those first Trophy Bonded bullets. I have in fact used them on big bears up in Canada and they perform as to the script. Least the 250 grainers out of my 350 Rem Mag Carbine did. Them bears did not like it much though, they just dropped in place and gave up!

IronKnees.... Sierra bullets have always been one of the most accurate bullets around. Since they came out with the Pro Hunter I haven't had any trouble with jacket-core seperation. The bullet below is a Sierra .308 150 grain Spitzer. It was fired from a 30/06 at the hog in the photo. The bullet was in the skin and shield on the off side.

The hog was killed by a guest of mine on my own lease. It was his first hog and was he excited. I think I get about as much enjoyment out of a kill made by someone else as do of my own kills.

Nice boar and great picture of the recovered bullet IronWood... I recovered mine from about the same area as you did. Low on the off side, but just behind what I would consider the shield area... When hunting with dogs, I do not load hot... I don't want the bullet to exit because of the dogs... I had these loaded to 2400 fps over the chronograph...

Thanks for the nice words about my photo. When I recover a bullet, which is pretty rare, I remove as much of the flesh as I can. Then I soak the bullet in the tablet type of denture cleanser. I've never chronographed that load, and I really don't know why I haven't. The bullet should have a muzzle velocity near 2900 fps.

My friend took this hog at about 40 yards from my wife's deer stand. As you know there really isn't much movement to the skin in the shield area. The bullet had penetrated the off side shield but didn't penetrate the skin. The shot was placed just right. Went through both lungs and the hog didn't go over 30 yards.

As you can see from the photo 30 yards in that terrain can be "a breath holder" when going in after a hog.

Hey Guys,

Have you ever seen boar rug ? I went to this ranch in south central Michigan called " Thunder Hills " shot a very nice russian with my .58 Big Boar T/C mz, the mount turned out great, the following year went back and took another, not quit as big as the first but nice, I didn't see a need for another on the wall so I asked the taxidermis to do a boar rug, he said he's never heard of one ever being done, but he agreed to do it, he based his price on how much he charges for bear rugs of the same size. I finally got it back about 9 months later, he did a great job on it ( it's tough on bare feet ). He charged me $700.00. Because of my rug, he has been over welmed with orders.

Are you saying that the Remington Core Lockts act like premium bullets? I would think that they would be on par with other conventional non-premium bullets.

Hey Coug, remember what I told you about the way I load when using dogs hunting boar. I do not want the bullet to exit in deference to the safety of the dogs.... You just don't know which way they will come out for sure, and with dogs, you simply don't need a blood trail. I use 2400 fps for the 180 grain round nose bullets and Barnes X ... If not using dogs though, I most decidedly WANT the exit... And, years of boar hunting this way has proven my "theroy" to be sound... Dave
