Hello, I was wondering if anyone had a load they could recomend for the 280 remington using the hornady 175 grain spire point bullet. I was hoping for 2700fps. I have a older hornady reloading manual that states 54 grains of IMR 4350 for 2700fps, max load. In the newer manuals this load is over max. This is for a bolt action. I had been using the 139grain sst interlock. I wanted to try the 175 grain for less meat damage on deer. The lighter bullet hits like the hammer of thor, but it damages alot of meat.

Well, here's what I found:
IMR-4350 From 39.6 grains to 52.0 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

But my favorite was:
RL-25 From 50.7 grains to 54.5 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

Thanks for the replies. Like the other posters have said, the 139gr sst is a very destructive bullet on game. They don't go anywhere but I like making stuff out of the shoulders. I workded up to 52gr of IMR4350 and the Hornady 175gr interlock spire point. Two shots touching and the third one opened the group up to about 3/4". I chose the 175 gr because I wanted to slow the 280 down but still have great penetration.

had the same problem with hornadys and siearas in the 280 I switched to 145 speer grand slams and theve worked great for me. There stout enough to hold together and they have given me alot better accuracy then the rest of the premium bullets.

The four deer that I've killed with the 280/139gr. SSTs weren't tore up that bad. Maybe I got lucky. I would say with 175gr. bullets I'd look at H4831SC since it's slower burning. I use IMR 4831 with 139gr. I may go to the standard Hornady SPs since they're a bit cheaper and the SST really isn't necessary for as far as I shoot.

I checked on H4831, in a 2004 hodgdon manual. It lists a max charge of 51 grains, 2477 fps @ 49,800 cup. It would be nice to see some loads for the 280 that don't include the semi-auto, cup limit of 50,000. I think that the 280 could do a little better without hot-rodding it.

The Speer n. 13 manual list 52gr. max for H4831 and 175gr. bullets for 2558fps. They list 53gr. of RL 22 for 2616fps for the same bullets. 52gr. of RL 19 lists 2597fps.

Hornady Fith Edition lists 53.7gr. of H4831 and their 175gr. bullets at 2600fps. They list 55.6gr. of RL 22 for same bullets at 2700 fps. IMR 4831 at 51.1 gr. listed as 2700fps. Hornady's data is out of a Rem. 700 and Speer's is out of a Ruger 77 MK II.

The hornady loads look pretty good. Looks like I need to buy some RL22. I think 2700fps and that 175gr hornady spire point interlock is a pretty formidable load. I have a speer #12 manual and non of those loads listed for their 175gr bullets, mag tip and grand slam will reach the upper 2500's. Compared to the hornady manual it seems alittle light, but the speer is for speer bullets and the hornady is for their bullets. Maybee the speer bullets have a longer bearing surface or they have softer jackets.
